RMIT Students ranked among top three teams in Siemens Immersive Design Challenge

A team of RMIT Engineering students were crowned runners up in the inaugural Siemens Immersive Design Challenge.

The students beat more than 900 students from all over the globe to achieve their second-place ranking. 

The team, made up of students Troy Ferreira, Amelia Hirte, Aiden West, and Miguel Higinio, used the latest 3D virtual reality googles to help them design a payload for a rover set to be sent to the planet Mars. 

They were supervised by Dr. Graham Dorrington and research assistant, Grant Bradbeer, from the Department of Aerospace, as well as expert mentors from Siemens Australia. 

Siemens Digital Industries Software, in collaboration with Sony, held the first Immersive Design Challenge, with the aim of empowering today’s students with the tools and skill set needed for their role in the workforce of tomorrow.

The challenge saw 900 participants, representing 230 universities from 38 countries, to create impactful ideas, develop their digital mindset and digital skill set, and learn about how sustainable design principles can be combined with immersive engineering technology to imagine the future.

The first round consisted of short questions about the student’s product / idea and their understanding of Immersive Engineering. 

The second round featured a short list of 40 teams who developed and visualized their ideas with support from Siemens experts and mentors using Siemens’ NX™ Student Edition. 

The three finalist teams, including RMIT, then worked with Siemens’ NX™ Immersive Designer software and the Sony XR head-mounted display on campus to bring their idea to life with support from Siemens’ experts. The teams presented their concepts during a live online event. 

Alongside the learning and networking opportunities, all challenge participants earned digital badges to recognize their achievements.

“This was an outstanding achievement by our student team, who deserve our heartiest congratulations,” said Dorrington. 

“Through this competition the students were able to have hands-on experience using the latest virtual reality software and hardware, whilst also developing skills in project management and the design process.”
