RMIT features in 2025 Australia Day honours

Current and former RMIT staff and alumni have been recognised in the 2025 Australia Day honours list.

This year’s honours list recognised and celebrated 732 Australians, who have made significant contributions to their community, made outstanding achievements or provided excellent or meritorious service.

Associate Professor Marietta Martinovic and Dr Christine Craik, both from the RMIT School of Global, Urban and Social Studies in the College of Design and Social Context, were among current university staff awarded with honours this week.

Professor Martinovic was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for service to social welfare, and to criminology.

A decorated teacher for over two decades at RMIT, Professor Martinovic pioneered 'Inside Out', an Australian-first education program launched in 2015, partnering with Corrections Victoria.

The innovative program allows people in custody to study criminology alongside RMIT University students, who gain a rare insight into the human and social elements of incarceration.

Dr Craik was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division for significant service to the community as a social worker, to tertiary education, and as a volunteer.

She has been an RMIT lecturer and researcher since 2009, with expertise in domestic and family abuse, trauma and crisis work.

Dr Craik is a specialist Family Violence Accredited Social Worker and has been a social worker for over 30 years.  She has worked in roles from family violence, sexual assault and trauma debriefing.

Dr Christine Craik was among current university staff awarded with honours this week.

RMIT alumni also received 2025 Australia Day honours, including:

Professor Emerita Margaret Plant was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for service to visual arts, and to art history.

Dr Wendy Bunston was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for service to social welfare research.

Stacey Campton was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for service to netball, and to the Indigenous community.

Wendy Simpson was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the General Division for significant service to social welfare, to cultural and church organisations, and as a mentor.

Michael Nowill received a Conspicuous Service Medal (CSM) for meritorious devotion to duty as an Aviation Technician within the Fleet Air Arm.

James Blagg received a Conspicuous Service Cross (MBE) for outstanding achievement in Australian Defence Force air capability sustainment contracting.

Bartholemew Wunderlich and Narelle Capp received the Ambulance Service Medal (ASM) for distinguished service as a member of an Australian ambulance service.
