Vale Professor Peter Buckskin, Doctor of Arts honoris causa RMIT

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised this statement acknowledges the passing of an Aboriginal Elder.

The community of RMIT University recognises the passing of Professor Peter Buckskin, a proud Narungga man and a valued member of the RMIT community, recognised as a recipient of the Doctor of Arts (Honoris Causa) in 2021.

Peter’s impact was unmistakable and he leaves behind a remarkable legacy that will continue to inspire RMIT’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, whose talent and dedication we are privileged to nurture.

Internationally recognised as a leading figure in teaching and Indigenous education advocacy, Peter received numerous awards and honours.

Yet perhaps his most enduring contribution was the standard he set, one that will continue to guide and challenge those who work to advance Indigenous education.

At RMIT, we share Peter’s deep commitment to improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We will continue this work by creating life-changing opportunities that honour his legacy, and the foundations laid by those who came before him.

While many tributes will rightly acknowledge Peter’s achievements, it is his presence that will be most deeply missed by his family, friends and colleagues in the weeks and months ahead.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to all who grieve his loss, especially his two children Peter and Lorraine, and great nephew Haymish, and at RMIT will remember him.
