RMIT Vice-Chancellor elected as a Fellow of ATSE

RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Alec Cameron, has been recognised with election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) for 2026.

RMIT Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Alec Cameron, has been recognised with election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) for 2026.

Professor Cameron was among 34 innovators elected for their outstanding achievements in applied science and engineering across industry leadership, policymaking, research and commercialisation.

ATSE’s vision is for a sustainable and prosperous Australia where engineering and applied sciences protect our environment, nurture a skilled workforce, grow competitive industries and enable all Australians to reach their greatest potential.

Professor Cameron’s career achievements demonstrate sustained national and international impact through the application of engineering, digital systems and institutional leadership to practical technological and societal challenges, including participation and inclusion in STEM.

His contribution is distinguished not simply by senior leadership roles, but by a consistent capacity to design, implement and scale systems that strengthen technological capability, workforce formation and innovation performance across industry, telecommunications and higher education.

With a breadth of experience across industry, telecommunications, research-intensive universities and international education, he has operated at the intersection of technology, infrastructure, policy and organisational transformation throughout his career.

Professor Cameron said he was deeply honoured to have been elected a Fellow of the ATSE.

“My career began as an engineer, and while it has taken me through telecommunications, technology and university leadership, I’ve always been motivated by the same challenge: how we turn knowledge and technological capability into practical benefit for people and society,” he said.

“I’m particularly pleased to join such an extraordinary group of new Fellows, and look forward to contributing to ATSE’s important work across STEM education and skills, digital futures, innovation and public policy.

“Fellowship is both an honour and an opportunity to contribute, and I’m very much looking forward to getting involved.”

An independent, non-government organisation and charity, ATSE is led by a diverse Fellowship of over 900 of Australia’s leading applied scientists, technologists and engineers.

“Election to ATSE is one of the highest honours and recognition of achievement in Australian technology and engineering, and is also a testament to the Fellows’ impact, leadership, and expertise,” said ATSE President Dr Cathy Foley.

“Fellowship is also a responsibility. Our Fellows are highly engaged and last year volunteered a combined 4,000 hours of critical and valuable input into national conversations, expert advice to government and support for educational and STEM workforce programs.”
