Cyber Security Standards in the Australian Mining and Minerals Industry

A study to expand awareness and promote best practice

Highly sophisticated cyber-attacks are proliferating at an alarming pace worldwide, yet some industries are exposed to higher risks than others. The nature of the mining industry, for instance, enhances the magnitude of risk as a cyber-attack could easily result in the loss of life.

In 2022, this looming cyber security threat has only been amplified as mining industries have become increasingly reliant on automated and connected operational technologies (OT) to support remote workforces and control operations without being on-site.6 It may come as no surprise, then, that there was a fourfold increase in the number of reported cyber breaches among mining companies from 2019 to 2020.

The Study

RMIT Centre for Cyber Security Research and Innovation (CCSRI) has partnered with The Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) in this study to support the adoption of three ISO (International Organization for Standardization).

This study aims to develop an accurate understanding of the mining and minerals industry in Australia in their adoption of three international standards.

The standards are:

  1. AS ISO/IEC 27001:2013 Information Technology – Security Techniques – Information Security Management Systems – Requirements
  2. AS ISO 22301:2019 Security and Resilience - Business Continuity Management Systems – Requirements
  3. AS ISO 55001:2014 Asset Management – Management Systems – Requirements

The goal of this study is to identify barriers, as well as enablers regarding the use, implementation, and maintenance of these standards in the mining and minerals industry. Complete the survey below.

The Survey

There are over 600 mining companies in Australia’s mining industry. All executive and senior management representatives are invited to participate.

Eligibility to complete the survey:

  • An adult aged 18 years or older?
  • Currently working in an executive or management role within the mining industry with operations in Australia?

Working includes all forms of employment (full-time, part-time, permanent, fixed-term, casual contract) or self-employed.
