CCSRI Awarded Researcher of the Year at AISA Cyber Security Awards

The RMIT Centre for Cyber Security Research and Innovation (CCSRI) was recognised for outstanding work on their delivery of the Gender Dimensions in the Australian Cyber Security Sector project at the 2023 AISA Cyber Security Awards.

Taking home the prize for Researcher of the Year, the Centre was celebrated for having one of the most impactful research projects across the Australian cyber security sector in 2023.

The Australian Information Security Association (AISA) is Australia’s peak industry body for information and cyber security, and the annual AISA Awards are an opportunity to recognise the excellence, innovation, contribution, diversity, and leadership in the cyber security sector.

The project

Commencing in mid-2022, The RMIT Centre for Cyber Security Research and Innovation (CCSRI) and the Australian Women in Security Network (AWSN) partnered to explore diversity challenges in the cyber security sector, with a focus on gender dimensions. The AWSN’s involvement in the study was facilitated through sponsorship support by the Australian Signals Directorate, Australia's foreign signals intelligence and security agency.

To gain an accurate picture of the security industry workforce in Australia, the project team undertook preliminary research, surveyed those in the Australian security sector and combined these responses with ABS data from the 2006 – 2021 Census. In analysing this data, the team was able to identify practical ways to expand and diversify the industry’s talent pool to best equip it for the growing challenges and demands it faces. The final project report was launched in April 2023 at a round table event with the Minister for Cyber Security, The Hon Clair O’Neil MP, at RMIT University.

The award

For 11 years, the AISA Cyber Security Awards have given organisations, individuals and teams across the sector an opportunity for national recognition of their work and the value it brings. The judging panel for the awards is comprised of senior leaders, academics, business executives, entrepreneurs, experts and innovators, making an AISA Cyber Security Award both a prestigious and peer-reviewed recognition of one’s capabilities and achievements.

The success of this project and recognition of this award would not have been possible without the support and assistance of many individuals and institutions. With special thanks to the project team of Professor Matt Warren, Dr Leonora Risse, Associate Professor Lena Wang, Dr Maria Beamond, Dr Joanne Hall, Dr Banya Barua and Laki Kondylas. The RMIT Centre for Cyber Security Research and Innovation celebrates this award with all of those who contributed to this project.
