In support of the people of Afghanistan

The RMIT community is deeply concerned and saddened by the unfolding events in Afghanistan. Our thoughts are with the Afghan community – whether they be in Australia anxiously awaiting news from family and friends or in Afghanistan dealing with the most challenging and tragic of circumstances. Our hearts go out to you and, as we do each day, we stand beside our Afghan staff, students and alumni at this very difficult time.

At RMIT, led by our values, we work hand-in-hand everyday with our entire community including our staff, students, multi-faith chaplains, unions and clubs to give everyone the chance to be their best, to shape their future and belong. We are united in the belief that our cultural and religious diversity are among the greatest strengths of the RMIT community and of our society.

We commit to offer the practical support that we can and have reached out with a range of services including our Employee Assistance Program for staff and the expertise of our student welfare advisors and RMIT counsellors for our students, as well as a range of study support services. Across our sector, we also commit to draw the attention of the Australian Government to the plight of Afghans who are alumni of Australian universities and have a special and enduring connection to Australia. 

Observing this tragic situation unfold at such a distance, we can feel a sense of helplessness – so it’s important to focus on actions that we can take to help make a difference. One way is to make a donation that will support the essential work of one of the many humanitarian organisations who are working on the ground providing essential services including supporting the safe departure of Afghans in need. The Australian Red Cross, UNHCR - The UN Refugee Agency and In UN Women Australia are just a few examples to consider.

Even for those not directly impacted by the situation in Afghanistan, horrific events like this can cause distress for many reasons. If anyone in the RMIT community needs support, please reach out. Today, even through challenging times, we are grateful to be part of this country of many cultures and resonant values.
