RMIT University remembers Ivan Deveson AO who passed away on 31 August 2024 after a life of contribution and leaving a significant legacy.
He had a long association with RMIT, initially as a student of Production Engineering, then as Adjunct Professor and Director in Residence at RMIT’s School of Management, and finally as the first appointee to the formal role of RMIT Chancellor from 1992 to 1995.
After a long global career as a successful business leader and executive in industries ranging from automotive to entertainment, his tenure as RMIT Chancellor was followed by a substantial term as Lord Mayor of Melbourne from 1996 to 1999.
Passionate about business ethics and giving back to the community, beyond his extensive role in the worlds of business and academia Ivan also turned his expertise to charitable organisations including the Melbourne City Mission and the Epilepsy Foundation of Victoria.
He was named Victorian of the Year in 1991 and received an Order of Australia in the same year, for his contribution to the automotive industry and to business.
We are grateful for Ivan’s service to RMIT and to the communities we serve. Our thoughts are with his family and friends as they reflect on an extraordinary life.
