Your most asked questions from our Student Connect AMA

We hosted an AMA on the RMIT Students Instagram broadcast channel and replied to your burning questions about getting started at uni.

Here are answers to the questions students asked most, plus where to look if you’re still feeling stuck.

Finding your class

Log in to myTimetable to see where each class is held. Locations follow the format Building.Floor.Room. For example, 080.04.020 means Building 80, Level 4, Room 20.

If the Campus column says Canvas, the class runs online at the scheduled time. To join online, open your course on the Canvas dashboard and select the Collaborate Ultra panel. If your teacher uses a different tool, they’ll confirm this in Canvas.

Moving between consecutive classes

Back-to-back classes happen. Teachers should wrap up with enough time to pack up and move. If you’re crossing buildings, check your campus map before class ends so the changeover isn’t stressful.

Changing your timetable

You can enrol in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 in advance. To change class times or swap groups, use myTimetable during the published windows. For Semester 1, allocation adjustment closes at 5pm on 20 March. You can find key timetable dates here. If the class you want is full, click the heart icon to join the waitlist. You may be moved automatically if a place becomes available.

For more information, see Class timetable FAQs.

Getting your student card

The easiest way to order your student card is online. Your first student card is free. For information on ordering a new card or replacing a lost or stolen card, see here. If your card hasn’t arrived after about a week, Student Connect can check the status.

If you cannot complete the process online, see here for how to organise your card in person.

Understanding your fees and loans

Staying on top of fees, loans and payments matters, especially before census date.

Thinking about dropping a class, applying for a student loan, requesting credit, or taking leave of absence? Do it before census to avoid academic or financial impacts.

Each class has its own census date, to find out when your classes census date is, follow the instructions on What is my census date?

Enrolment Online is your hub to check what you owe, download invoices, see your Commonwealth Support approval letter, and add or drop classes.

Accessing healthcare as an international student

If your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) was arranged through RMIT, your provider is Medibank. Search your email for your policy certificate, activate your card and contact the provider for claims or coverage questions. If you organised OSHC yourself, reach out to your chosen insurer.

What onboarding modules you’re required to complete

As a new student you’re required to complete two modules: Academic Integrity Awareness and Sex and Consent. If you are a commencing graduate research student, you will have additional mandatory modules.

While How2RMIT isn’t compulsory, it is highly recommended to help you get set up and organised.

Getting the right study materials

Don’t buy textbooks or equipment until your teacher confirms what you need in class or on Canvas. Many courses use digital resources, Library access and second-hand options to keep costs down.

Additional support is available to ensure equal opportunities for students with a disability, long term illness or mental health condition, and primary carers of individuals with a disability.
