This is a pre-apprenticeship program.
Improve your employability with knowledge and practical skills in building and construction.
You’ll gain an understanding of fundamental building skills and principles, and be exposed to common scenarios you’ll experience on the job.
The program will give you a competitive advantage when applying for employment opportunities within the construction industry.
You’ll also be able to undertake further studies within building, construction, plumbing and carpentry.
You will be taught in a combination of workshop and theory classes, with an emphasis on hand skills.
Ongoing assessment throughout the semester may include tests, oral classes, presentationsand practical assignments.
RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, studios, workshops, presentations, group discussions and syndicate work.
You'll have access to online resources through the myRMIT student portal.
You’ll develop industry specific skills including:
- extra-low voltage circuits
- fabrication of utilities and components
- solving electrotechnology problems
- providing reports for the energy sector.
You’ll also gain basic knowledge about the refrigeration and air conditioning industry by completing learning experiences in:
- single phase 230v
- refrigeration tubing and fitting
- basic vapour compression systems
- basic operating conditions of air conditioning systems.
You’ll also gain knowledge and experience on work health and safety in the construction industry and the general electrical and refrigeration industries.
At the end of this program, you’ll enhance your opportunities for employment as an apprentice electrician, refrigeration/air conditioning mechanic or electrical/instrumentation technician.

You’ll be able to enter the building and construction industry and be employed as an apprentice carpenter, formworker, bricklayer or as a general labourer within the construction industry.
Most students go on to continue an apprenticeship in plumbing, carpentry, or other construction-related trades.
You'll be required to participate in an assessment to establish your English, mathematical and spatial reasoning skills.
This assessment will be conducted to ensure you have the correct support needed for you to be successful in the program.

The tuition fees you will pay for this program will depend on whether you are offered a Victorian Government subsidised place or a full-fee place.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.
The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2018 is $298.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.
If your application for a fee concession is approved, you will be charged 20% of the standard government subsidised tuition fee for your program. You will also be charged a lower rate on your student services and amenities fee (SSAF).
