Supply chain management for waste minimisation of residential sector

Framework development (PDF 1.1 MB)
Literature review (PDF 1.4 MB)

This project aims to reduce construction waste through the development of a construction materials waste avoidance supply chain management self-assessment framework.

The project is a partnership between Metricon, Australand, FMG Engineering, Boral, the Master Builders Association of Victoria (MBAV) and RMIT University. All organisations are part of the Australian Housing Supply Chain Alliance (AHSCA).

In Australia, waste generated throughout the construction of residential dwellings is a significant environmental and resource problem. Metricon and Australand aim to reduce construction waste through the development of the framework.

The framework will be developed based upon interviews and workshops with key personnel within the case-study organisations. This will result in the development of a tool and user guidelines which will be applicable to the wider construction industry. Piloting the framework across two construction companies ensures credibility, rigour and validity of project outcomes and provides a sound platform for wider dissemination to other housing sector participants.

Implementation of the framework will enable organisations to develop in-house capacity and benchmark their efforts for continuous improvement. Project outcomes will be disseminated to the wider construction sector through Housing Industry Association (HIA) and MBAV to facilitate the wider implementation of supply chain management (SCM) best practice aimed at avoiding and reducing materials waste on housing construction sites.
