RMIT teachers recognised at national teaching awards

Educators from RMIT’s Australian and Vietnam campuses have been recognised in the 2024 Australian Awards for University Teaching.

The Australian Awards for University Teaching celebrate educators who have demonstrated outstanding leadership through a commitment to innovation, delivery of quality teaching and a sustained dedication to improving student experience and learning outcomes.

Senior lecturers Dr Justin Battin and Dr Hua Qian (Vivian) Ang, along with two combined teams from the College of Business and Law (CoBL) were recognised with Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Education, Professor Sherman Young, said the awards recognise RMIT educators' continuous commitment to delivering engaging, relevant and authentic experiences to students that prepare them for the future of work.

"We're thrilled to celebrate the achievements of our educators in Australia and Vietnam,” he said.

"Through sharing and collaboration, our global community of educators are extending their impact beyond their local communities and bringing global perspectives into and beyond the classroom for all our students."

Dr Justin Battin (School of Communication and Design, RMIT Vietnam) was recognised for creatively and innovatively designing and implementing authentic assessments and a student as partners approach in a creative arts course, which promoted academic integrity and improved student learning outcomes.

Dr Hua Qian (Vivian) Ang (STEM College) received her citation for pioneering innovative EPIC (experiential, paired, inquiry-based, collective) principles, enabling students to master in demand T-shaped engineering skills and the community to build engineering interest, addressing Australia's engineering skills crisis.

The disruptive technologies in business education team (CoBL), including Dr Viktor Arity, Associate Professor Meredith Tharapos, and Professor Gillian Vesty, created innovative curriculum architecture using academically and industry informed disruptive digital pedagogy to empower graduates with critical professional skills and capabilities needed in the contemporary workplace.

A team comprised of CoBL educators from Melbourne and Vietnam - Associate Professor Marco De Sisto, Dr Ying Zhou, Dr Christopher Conroy, Hang Pham Thanh, Jonathan Quah and Dr Jung Woo Han – created the ‘Live-Local-Think-Global’ initiative to develop an inclusive learning ecosystem that values each culture, while fostering global human resource management mindsets to enhance student experience across RMIT’s international campuses.
