Governor-General of Australia visits RMIT University

RMIT was proud to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, to our city campus on Wednesday 29 January.

Hosted by Chancellor Peggy O’Neal AO, the Governor-General had the opportunity to engage in our student support services, learn more about the impact of the Australia Vietnam Policy Institute to deepen connections and trade between the two countries, and hear more about the vital work of the Centre for Innovative Justice.

Sworn in as Australia’s 28th Governor-General in July 2024, Ms Mostyn is a businesswoman and community leader, widely recognised for her exceptional service to the Australian community. She has a long history in executive and governance roles across diverse sectors, including business, sport, climate change, the arts, policy and not-for-profit.

Well known as a strong supporter of women in sport, she was an advocate for the creation of the AFL Women’s league and co-founder of the Minerva Network, Australia’s only mentorship and development program dedicated to professional female athletes.

The Governor-General is also passionate about gender inclusion and equality, sustainability, climate change action, mental health and reconciliation – contributing significantly across all fields through her roles on influential boards and committed advocacy work.

In 2024, she was appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia for eminent service in the social justice, gender equity, sporting, cultural and business sectors, to reconciliation, and to environmental sustainability. She had previously been appointed an Officer of the Order in 2021.

Her Excellency shares RMIT’s strong belief in the power of education to transform lives and communities, and it was a privilege to welcome her as a friend of our University.
