The perfect training ground: RMIT fashion students transform new Town Hall Station

Diploma of Fashion Styling students from RMIT’s College of Vocational Education have collaborated with the Metro Tunnel Project to display a futuristic photoshoot in the new Town Hall Station as part of Melbourne Fashion Week.

The fashion project drew on concepts on futurism, craftsmanship and innovation under the open theme “future commuter” with five looks showcased in a photoshoot in the soon-to-be opened station.

Katrina Rose, Program Manager for Fashion and Textiles in the College of Vocational Education, said that this project embodies RMIT’s hands-on, industry-connected learning as the students directly assisted the head stylist Bianca Christoff through every stage of the shoot.

“It’s learning by doing—putting classroom theory into professional practice with real clients and outcomes, that for this project are visible to the wider community. RMIT’s Fashion & Textiles VE programs blend practical, technical training with creative development, ensuring strong employability and real-world impact”.

In vocational education, it’s vital to stay current to keep up with the fast-paced fashion industry. Paul explains how RMIT keeps up with the pace.

Paul Castro Alvarez, Program Coordinator for Fashion and Textiles in the College of Vocational Education, said, “We continually adapt, innovate, and align our teaching with real-world developments and industry-focused projects. This ensures students are always learning the latest skills and approaches needed to thrive in an ever-evolving field.”

RMIT student Raine Weng Chuen Lee, who took part in the project, said the day flowed seamlessly and said they were thankful for the opportunity to take part in the shoot.

“RMIT has provided a very broad range of skills in such a short amount of time. It is unique in its way of portraying the creative process of a stylist and all the team members associated with the profession to students. By doing practical assignments in a range of fields, it has opened my eyes to the needs of a creative team.

“Studying at RMIT has refined my creative abilities in a way that has opened up horizons whilst maintaining an easy-to-follow structure. My creative identity has matured in its conceptualisation and has provided me with the vernacular and platform to express its voice through the lens of professionalism.”

Paul added that the project wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of teacher Sue Robinson and the creativity and vision of the head stylist Bianca Christoff, and that the students should be incredibly proud of the achievement as they exceeded expectations.

“Experiences like the Metro Tunnel project give students exposure beyond the classroom, applying their skills in authentic settings. Their dedication and professionalism show that they are the ones to watch in the future.”
