The Course in Introduction to the National Disability Insurance Scheme provides entrants who are new to this type of direct support work with an introduction to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and an introductory understanding of working with an NDIS participant.

The vocational outcome of the 22469VIC Course in Introduction to the National Disability Insurance Scheme is to ensure entrants who are new to this type of direct support work have an appropriate introduction to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and an introductory understanding of working with an NDIS participant.

Focus areas throughout the course will be on how to:

  • support an NDIS participant to achieve stated goals identified in their day-to-day support plans
  • take appropriate action within a human rights framework to ensure NDIS participant personal safety
  • work safely when supporting an NDIS participant
  • complete and process required documentation
  • liaise effectively with others.

This course is designed for:

  • people working in the disability sector as a carer or support worker
  • counsellors, nurses and health care professionals
  • youth and community services workers wishing to work in disability services
  • teachers and education support workers
  • NGOs, businesses or HR professionals looking to understand how the NDIS will impact the workforce.

This course is targeted at new entrants into the disability sector and provides a pathway to further qualifications – it is not intended as a replacement for full certificate-level qualifications. Individuals who attain this course and wish to continue working in the disability sector are strongly encouraged to further develop their skills and knowledge through the attainment of full qualifications.

Details

This course is delivered face-to-face, at the RMIT Melbourne City campus in the heart of the CBD. 

RMIT limits the number of participants in this course at any given time, which means more one-on-one time with teachers who have extensive knowledge and many years of experience in the disability and community services sector. 

It involves a combination of teaching and learning approaches including:

  • class Q&As with current NDIS participants
  • case study evaluation
  • guest lectures from industry specialists to provide insights into current workplace practices
  • industry-based presentations
  • interactive coursework and online resources
  • group-based learning
  • small-group discussions
  • questioning, observation and scenarios
  • reflective learning techniques
  • workshops.

To cater for different learner preferences there will be two options: 

  • One day per week, 7 hours per day
  • Two nights per week, 3.5 hours per session, with the final session held on a Saturday.

All subjects are delivered in English.

You will have access to online resources.

Career

The purpose of this course is to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and an introductory understanding of working with NDIS participants. 

Health Care and Social Assistance is the largest employing industry in Australia, with job growth set to continue over the next five years.

If you attain this qualification and wish to further build on your knowledge, you are strongly encouraged to develop your skills through the attainment of full certificate qualifications.

Free TAFE Short Courses

As part of the Free TAFE initiative, the Victorian Government is currently waiving course fees for select short courses. Students who are assessed as eligible for a Government subsidised place will not be charged a tuition fee.

Tuition fees

The tuition fees you will pay for this program will depend on whether you are offered a Victorian Government subsidised place or a full-fee place. To find out if you are eligible for a government subsidised place, follow the steps at How to check if you are eligible.

  • 2024 government subsidised place (with concession): AU$21* per annum
  • 2024 government subsidised place: AU$105* per annum
  • 2024 full-fee place: AU$800* per annum

Eligibility Exemption criteria

**The Victorian Government is currently waiving three (3) eligibility criteria around prior qualifications. This means that more people who want to study a vocational education program at RMIT, and who have studied previously, will be able to access a government subsidised place in a program. Find out how to check your eligibility

Payments and refunds

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2025 is $365.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your course, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from course to course.

You may be entitled to apply for a fee concession or exemption if you are in a Victorian Government subsidised place and you meet the eligibility criteria.

If your application for a fee concession is approved, you will be charged 20% of the standard government subsidised tuition fee for your program. You will also be charged a lower rate on your student services and amenities fee (SSAF).
