Completion of first SHINe project: Decluttering health and safety management activities

SHINe’s first research project on decluttering health and safety management systems in the construction industry is now complete, with the production of a research report and process mapping tool.

The decluttering project was delivered by research team members, Rita Peihua Zhang, Helen Lingard, Payam Pirzadeh and Huey Wen Lim, as well as Scott McMillan (Melbourne Park) and industry project team members.

A structured and systematic process mapping tool was developed in the research. The tool provides industry stakeholders with a practical, evidence-informed approach to collaboratively identify and reduce safety clutter in health and safety management activities.

The research report documents the use of this tool to understand the sources of safety clutter in two areas of health and safety management:

(1)   subcontractor onboarding, and

(2)   multi-level risk assessment.

By using the process mapping approach with different industry stakeholders, safety clutter hotspots can be identified in health and safety management activities. It also allows the sources of safety clutter to be identified. Activities identified as being prone to safety clutter can then be examined to identify opportunities for decluttering that are acceptable to key stakeholders.

This will help organisations to confidently target appropriate improvements while ensuring decluttering actions help (and do not hinder) health and safety management effectiveness.
