Sites-of-respite research

'Sites of respite' details a research scoping exercise on acoustic ecology completed at SIAL Sound Studios in 2010.

The research examines issues related to the acoustic design of specific acoustic environments in cities, drawing on extensive literature and research in acoustic ecology.

Aural-Geography maps will be formulated to identify sites of aural significance, which will inform the planning, design and management of micro-acoustic environments in urban settings, for all urban dwellers.

Important notes:

  1. The author of the document wishes to acknowledge an oversight on page 19, which suggests literature discussing education approaches to acoustic ecology is limited. Clearly R. Murray Schafer has written several books on education utilizing acoustic ecology approaches. Barry Truax, Hildegard Westerkamp and Susan Fyrkberg have also been very active in this area. The comment was in relation to the scope of the literature search within the report.
  2. The report mentions a number of appendices. Please contact the author, Jordan Lacey, if you would like to access these appendices.
