Spectrum concert series

Spectrum is a series of multi-channel electroacoustic concerts which showcase the work of researchers, associate artists and students within SIAL Sound Studios.

Spectrum and other SIAL Studio performances incorporate large site specific multi-channel diffusion systems: employing up to 40 loudspeakers used as a ’speaker orchestra’.

Since 2004, SIAL Sound Studios have presented the work of over 40 composers, including Australian premieres of electroacoustic works by Karlheinz Stockhausen (DrachenkampfKlavierstuck XVIKometVibra Elufa and Tanze Lucefa) and new compositions from international studios.

Concerts

Spectrum 01

Spectrum 01 was the opening event for the SIAL Sound Studios. The concerts marked the premiere of the large-scale surround speaker system developed by the Studios.

Spectrum 02

Three concerts of electroacoustic and contemporary music held at BMW Edge, Federation Square, Melbourne on 2-4 May 2006.

Spectrum 03

Three concerts of electroacoustic and contemporary music held at Meat Market, North Melbourne on 24-26 May 2007, featuring performances by SIAL staff, postgraduates and guests.

The program included new works from composers and sound designers working in the Studios, a feature concert of chamber music by Karlheinz Stockhausen and electroacoustic works recasting the soundscape of urban environments.

Spectrum 04

In 2008 the Spectrum 04 event focused on a series of workshops in preparation for the SIAL Sound Studios' 2009 performances at the Melbourne Recital Centre and workshops for the Urban Soundscape Group.

Spectrum 04 workshops held at Northcote Town Hall were funded by RMIT University's Design Research Institute.
