The recent rapid expansion of automated decision-making, enabled by a wide range of technologies from machine learning to the blockchain, has created new risks to human rights and welfare as well as great potential benefits. Increasing inequality, lower productivity and diminished economic security have all been highlighted as risks in the coming decade.

The ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S) is a new, cross-disciplinary, national research centre, which aims to create the knowledge and strategies necessary for responsible, ethical, and inclusive automated decision-making. The ADM+S Centre is hosted at RMIT University with nodes located at eight other Australian universities, and partners around the world. It brings together universities, industry, government and the community to support the development of responsible, ethical and inclusive automated decision-making.

Our role

With a vision for responsible, ethical and inclusive automated decision-making the Centre’s objectives are to:

Generate an integrated understanding of the evolution, distribution, dynamics and potential of ADM

Formulate world-leading policy and practice in responsible, ethical and inclusive ADM, for governments, industry and the non-profit sectors

Enhance public understanding, and inform public debate on ADM

Educate and train researchers and practitioners in this challenging new field

Research from the centre will be used to inform public policy and procedures, shape debate on the automated decision-making technology, and train future researchers and practitioners in the field.

Our people

The Centre brings together leading researchers in the humanities, social and technological sciences in an international industry, research and civil society network. It is led by Distinguished Professor Julian Thomas from RMIT’s School of Media and Communications.
