World’s first research centre on social science of blockchain

RMIT has established the RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub to take advantage of the global blockchain revolution.

The RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub will be the world’s first research centre on the social science of blockchain.

Blockchain technology is becoming a core infrastructure for the global economy.

The blockchain is the cutting-edge technology of distributed ledgers that allow for smart contracts and instant global payments systems that will revolutionise business as we know it in coming years.

The RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub will be the world’s first research centre on the social science of blockchain.

Led by Professor Jason Potts in the School of Economics, Finance and Marketing, the Hub will:

  • develop a world-leading interdisciplinary research team focused on the economic, cultural and social implications and impacts of blockchain technologies;
  • partner with industry to share research, ensure students are work-ready when they graduate, and provide business solutions and advice;
  • develop and implement policy and industry-relevant measures of the size and impact of the blockchain economy; and
  • engage with government, policymakers, stakeholders and the public debate on the social and policy impact of blockchain technology.

Already Australian businesses are demanding students who graduate work-ready with skills in blockchain technologies, and policymakers in government and industry are looking for guidance about how best to meet blockchain opportunities.

Professor Ian Palmer, Pro Vice-Chancellor Business and Vice-President, said: “The RMIT Blockchain Innovation Hub is the only full-service, research, teaching and industry-linked blockchain body in the world.

“This is an exciting new research strength for the College of Business and opens up exciting, new opportunities for Victorian and Australian industry.”
