Key design and creative subjects ranked #1 in Australia, top 20 in the world

RMIT has secured its position as the nation’s leading institution for design and creative fields, with Architecture / Built Environment and Art & Design both ranked #1 in Australia and in the top 20 globally in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject.

Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Alec Cameron said the RMIT community was incredibly proud of the results. 

“This is clear evidence of our world-class teaching and research and, most importantly, that we are living up to our vision of being a leading university of impact,” he said.  

Architecture/Built Environment continued to go from strength to strength, ranking first in Australia and jumping seven places to secure 18th in the world. Art and Design maintained its strong position, also ranking first in Australia and 18th in the world. 

Rises were largely driven by improved performance in academic reputation and research measures, demonstrating RMIT’s international standing among peers. 

They also evidence the calibre of RMIT graduates who are making a difference in their fields and a positive contribution to their industry and society. 

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Design & Social Context Professor Tim Marshall said it was wonderful to be recognised In Australia and across the world for the University’s innovative, interdisciplinary and creative programs. 

“These results are testament to RMIT’s cutting-edge teaching and advanced research that address the most important challenges and opportunities of our time, and the positive impact of our academics, researchers, students and alumni,” he said.

RMIT’s Architecture / Built Environment and Art & Design have both ranked #1 in Australia and in the top 20 globally.

Communication & Media Studies again ranked in the top 50 globally while Engineering - Civil & Structural, Library & Information Management, and Materials Science continued to rank in the top 100. Accounting & Finance moved up a band to make the cut this year, with all these subjects ranked in the top 10 in Australia.

Last year RMIT achieved outstanding results in the QS World University Rankings 2024, leaping 50 places to rank 140th in the world and 11th in Australia.

The University also maintained its strong position in the QS World University Rankings Sustainability 2024, which measures how universities are tackling the world’s biggest environmental, social and governance challenges, ranking equal 62nd globally, and 11th in Australia. 

“This rounds out RMIT’s strong performance in the overall suite of QS 2024 rankings, including reputation, subject and sustainability categories. I congratulate the entire RMIT team on this outstanding achievement,” Cameron added.

QS World University Rankings by Subject assesses the reputation and research activity of around 5,000 institutions around the world, of which only 1,561 receive a ranking across 55 subject areas. RMIT is ranked in 25 of these.

The rankings are compiled from an analysis of over 17 million academic papers, 14 million citations and expert opinions of 240,000+ academics and employers.
