RMIT Vietnam celebrates 25 years with $25 million investment and Governor-General visit

RMIT University has marked 25 years of transnational education in Vietnam with a $25 million investment in research and innovation, announced during a visit by Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia at the Saigon South campus.

The Governor-General’s visit included both the Hanoi and Saigon South campuses, where she engaged with students and experienced the vibrancy of campus life which included a spirited performance by the Dance Club and toured the Financial Trading Lab and an installation showcasing RMIT’s research impact over the past 25 years. She also met with current students Tran Lam Nam Bao who explained his design of our 25-year logo, a symbol of RMIT’s enduring partnership with Vietnam and was interviewed by Dang Thuy Thuy Dung, where the Governor General shared an inspirational message to all RMIT students.

While in Hanoi, Ms Mostyn officially opened the Hanoi front door of the Australia Vietnam Policy Institute (AVPI), a truly bilateral policy institute that facilitates dialogue, trade and investment between our two nations. The launch underscores RMIT’s role as a key contributor to Australia’s commitment to supporting Vietnam’s social and economic development.

The $25 million investment will significantly expand RMIT’s PhD scholarship program, enabling Vietnamese candidates to pursue internationally recognised doctoral degrees while remaining embedded in their communities. The initiative supports Vietnam’s national commitment to increase the number of science, technology and innovation researchers to 12 per 10,000 people by 2030.

“RMIT has proudly represented Australia in Vietnam for 25 years, and we’ve made a real impact, with nearly 25,500 local graduates ready to contribute to the prosperity of their country,” said RMIT Chancellor Peggy O’Neal AO who joined Her Excellency across her campus visits.

Led by RMIT Vietnam and delivered in collaboration with local industry partners, the expanded postgraduate research program will focus on outcomes aligned with Vietnam’s national priorities.

“Education and research are integral to Australia’s Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam,” said RMIT Vietnam Pro-Vice Chancellor and General Director Professor Scott Thompson-Whiteside. “This investment strengthens in-country research efforts and connects Vietnamese expertise with leading experts in Australia.”

With nearly four decades of regional engagement, RMIT continues to foster innovation, collaboration and bilateral ties across Asia.
