Think of your favourite brand. Now think of all the different ways you interact with that brand: you might watch a commercial, visit their store, call their customer service team, browse their website and (of course) use their product. Customer Experience Design (CX) is the process of making each of those interactions as smooth and meaningful as possible.
CX Design has a lot in common with User Experience Design (UX), but it also adds another dimension. While UX deals specifically with product interaction, CX Design tries to optimise the entire customer lifecycle—before, during and after purchase.
Why learn CX Design & Strategy? Because brands are investing more and more in customer experience: mapping it, tweaking it, studying it, improving it. As a CX Designer, you’ll be responsible for shaping the way people and businesses interact.
Learning CX Design is one of the best ways to future-proof your CV. According to studies from Adobe, many B2B businesses consider CX Design the biggest emerging commercial opportunity. Over 84% of companies who invest in CX report an increase in revenue, and customer experience is rapidly overtaking price and product as the key brand differentiator. CX is also a fairly broad field. You can follow several different career paths, depending on your interests.
Here are some careers that draw on CX Design & Strategy:
CX is how the world works now. Today, 89% of companies compete directly over customer experience – up from 36% in 2010. Brands need CX Designers and Strategists to distinguish them from their competitors and build market share. It’s a future-proof career choice.
With high demand comes high wages, and CX positions do tend to pay very well. The average CX Design salary is around $102,000 per annum, with similar prospects for UX Design ($107,000) and UI Design ($94,000). Senior CX Designers can command even higher salaries.
As a CX Designer, you’re responsible, in a big way, for the business’s overall success. And that success can be measured and tracked back to your performance. Every time a customer interacts with the brand, their experience relies on you. It’s an incredibly rewarding career.
While UX Design focuses on user research and information architecture, CX Design thinks even bigger. You’ll need to understand sales and marketing, brand reputation and customer empathy. No two days are the same in CX Design, and there’s always something new to learn.
Some experience in Adobe suite and basic web development can be helpful for CX Design, but it’s not necessary. Anyone can learn customer experience, and it actually relies far more on ‘soft skills’: empathy, curiosity, creativity, experimentation and communication.
An interesting stat regarding CX Design: companies who invest in customer experience actually have 1.5 times better employee engagement. That’s because companies that care about their customers tend to care about their staff. CX Design careers are popular for several reasons (great pay, job security etc.) but satisfaction is the big one. CX Designers have a measurable impact on business performance, and customer enjoyment, and no two days are ever the same.
