Energy @RMIT

RMIT has a long and rich history of cutting-edge, industrial relevant research in the energy sector. Energy@RMIT has brought together all the researcher capabilities to form a team with expertise that spans the complete research space required to understand, lead and support the energy transition.

This covers, for example, blue sky research into new materials for solar energy conversion and storage, modelling the electricity distribution network to understand how to stabilise it with high penetration of intermittent renewables, new biofuels, and the legal issues associated with implementing new energy policies. For more information see the five research areas below.

Research areas

Built environments

Energy in the Built Environment focusses on the development of cost-effective building systems; regulatory measures and policies; and their effects on human behaviour, health and the surrounding environment.

Conversion and storage

New and novel methods to up-convert energy into more useful forms. This energy can then be utilised immediately or be stored efficiently and cheaply.

Economics and Policy

The energy economics and policy area focuses on the relationships between markets, regulation and consumers in energy transitions.

Electrical Energy Systems

Innovative approaches to generate, convert and distribute electrical energy, underpinning the transition to a renewable energy based 21st century smart electrical grid from a centralised fossil-fuel approach.

Power and Energy Informatics

The Power & Energy Informatics group has internationally recognised expertise in all aspects of modelling, analysis, control, design and optimisation of Future Energy Systems and Smart Grids, addressing industrial problems.
