Joint PhD partnerships involve co-enrolment and supervision of HDR candidates leading to a joint award, or awards, from both partners.
University of Vienna, Austria
University of Vienna, the leading comprehensive institution in Austria has agreed to co-supervise candidates with RMIT through a Cotutelle Agreement in any discipline where there is joint capacity and expertise. Outside of STEM disciplines, joint candidates need to attain the required German language proficiency level. Participating candidates enrol at both Universities and spend a minimum of one year at the host university. The thesis is submitted to both institutions and the candidate must undertake an oral defence as part of the University of Vienna component of the examination. Successful candidates are awarded a PhD degree from each institution, acknowledging the joint supervision and award.
Chongqing University, China
Chongqing University, a leading comprehensive institution in China, with particular strengths in engineering and mathematics has agreed to co-supervise candidates with RMIT through a Cotutelle Agreement in any discipline where there is joint capacity and expertise. Participating candidates enrol at both Universities and spend a minimum of one year at the host university. The thesis is submitted to both institutions and the candidate must undertake an oral defence as part of the Chongqing component of the examination. Successful candidates are awarded a PhD degree from each institution, acknowledging the joint supervision and award.
Jilin University, China
Jilin University is one of the most prestigious universities in China and is a comprehensive national key university. Research projects in automotive engineering, chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering and biology are identified as world-renowned and Jilin is one of the Project 985 and 211 institutions. Jilin University offers more than 100 doctoral programs and enrols about 10,000 students in postgraduate programs.
Jilin University is located in the city of Changchun in the Jilin Province of northeast China. It boasts notable alumni including the Chinese Vice-Premier and a Nobel Peace prize winner.
Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA), China
Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics (NUAA) is a national key university with a focus on science and engineering disciplines located in the city of Nanjing, Jiangsu province. NUAA was established in 1952 and is now ranked in the QS top 200 universities in Asia. NUAA has Double-First-Class Discipline status as awarded by the Chinese Government for several disciplines. The university has developed from a coursework focused university to a research intensive university and is a top 10 university in China for research outputs. NUAA and RMIT University have mutually benefited from over a decade of collaboration. RMIT has a Collaborative Articulation Program (CAP) with NUAA for the Bachelor of Applied Science (Aviation). The Cotutelle agreement continues the collaboration and provides PhD candidate with access to NUAA’s world class facilities.
Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), China
Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) is located in the city of Xi’an Shaanxi Province, north western China and is a Public Project 985, 211 institution, E9 Member and is directed by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Established in 1938, NPU is a multi-disciplinary research-oriented university, focusing their education and research around aeronautical, astronautical and marine engineering. NPU and RMIT collaborate for research and joint activities and also have agreements for coursework students which can be a pathway into the Cotutelle. NPU is the largest university in north west China and renowned for its excellence in research and facilities. Research funding for NPU has been increasing over the last few years and has exceeded US$253 mill.
Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SHUFE), China
Shanghai University of Finance and economics, (SHUFE) was established in 1917 and continually ranks among the best finance universities in China. From humble beginnings as business program in Nanjing, the institution relocated to Shanghai in 1921 and has grown into a large institution obtaining university status in 1932. Since then, SHUFE has expanded to a multi-disciplinary university, however the focus remains around Finance, Commerce, Economics and Business Management. China has awarded SHUFE Double-First-Class Discipline status. SHUFE is a Public 211 Institution and was the first Chinese university to offer masters programs in Hong Kong. SHUFE’s MBA has AMBA accreditation and is a member of AACSB.
Dauphine Université Paris, France
Paris Dauphine University was established in 1968 as a Faculty of Economics and Management, in former NATO Headquarters in Paris. Dauphine is renowned for its teaching in finance, economics, law, mathematics and business and has 'Grand Establissement' status.
Dauphine has Cotutelle agreements with Autonomous University of Madrid and Goethe University, Frankfurt. It offers five doctoral programs across economics, management, information techonology, mathematics and social sciences. Instruction is delivered in French with some international programs delivered in English.
Dauphine, University Complutense Madrid and RMIT are joint partners in the European Union's Horizon 2020 GeoSafe project, researching bush and wildfire prevention.
RWTH Aachen, Germany
RWTH Aachen is a leading research-intensive institution in Germany with close global partnerships with a wide range of industry and delivery partners globally. RWTH Aachen’s Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and RMIT co-supervise candidates through a Cotutelle Agreement in relevant engineering disciplines. Participating candidates enrol at both Universities and spend a minimum of one year at the host university. The thesis is submitted to both institutions and the candidate must undertake an oral defence as part of the RWTH Aachen component of the examination. Successful candidates are awarded a PhD degree from each institution, acknowledging the joint supervision and award.
Politecnico di Torino, Italy
Politecnico di Torino (PoliTO) is a leading institution active in engineering and architecture disciplines. PoliTO and RMIT co-supervise candidates through a Cotutelle Agreement in any discipline where there is joint capacity and expertise. Participating candidates enrol at both Universities and spend a minimum of one year at the host university. The thesis should be submitted to both institutions and the home institution’s regulations govern the examination process. Successful candidates are awarded a PhD degree from each institution, which acknowledges the joint supervision and award.
University of Twente, Netherlands
University of Twente (UT) is a university in the Netherlands with a focus on research and entrepreneurship. UT and RMIT have a Double Badged PhD Agreement to co-supervise research training in any discipline where there is joint capacity and expertise. Participating candidates enrolled at both Universities through this agreement are jointly supervised by staff from UT and RMIT and will spend between 6 and 12 months of their study at the host institution. Examination culminates in an Oral Defence in the Netherlands and successful candidates are awarded a Double Badged PhD degree.
University of Agder, Norway
Universityof Agder, based in the city of Kristiansand, in the south of Norway, was established as a teacher training college in 1839. There were several mergers with other institutions in the 20th Century and the University of Agder was formed and given full university status in September 2007.The university is spread across two campuses, the main Gimelmoen in Kristiansand and a smaller campus in Grimstad, 50km north east of Kristiansand. Agder is a comprehensive university administratively divided into five faculties and has approximately 13,000 students and 1100 staff. Candidates are co-supervised between Agder and RMIT and candidates will divide their time equally between the two universities.
Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain
Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) is one of the oldest universities in Spain, established in 1499. UCM is the largest public research university in Spain and recognised as prestigious academic university in Spain. The university offers doctoral programs across science, humanities, health sciences, engineering and social and legal sciences. Instruction is delivered in Spanish and English.
RMIT and UCM are partnering in the GEO-SAFE Project (Geospatial based Environment for an Optimisation and Spatial Statistics System Addressing Fire Emergencies), which will receive funding from the European Union.
The agreement covers joint supervision of PhD candidates admitted to both RMIT and UCM, leading to the award by each institution of a PhD following parallel submission and examination processes. Each candidate signs an agreement based on the agreed template both universities. Fee scholarships are provided by the enrolling school to incoming candidates.
University of Vigo, Spain
Vigo Universidad is a public university located in the city of Vigo, Galicia, Spain and was granted university status in 1990. Galicia’s first university was established in 1495 and this was the only university until satellite campuses were created in Coruna and Vigo. University of Vigo has three campuses: A Xunqueira, in Pontevedra; As Lagoas, in Ourense; Lagoas-Marcosende in north western Spain. Vigo offers a comprehensive range of programs and conducts research across a range of sciences, engineering disciplines, social sciences and humanities. The Cotutelle agreement was established by RMIT’s School of Global Urban and Social Studies, where there is research collaboration between the two universities.
Universidad de Alcalá, Spain
Universidad de Alcalá is located in Alcalá de Henares, north east of Madrid in Spain. The institution was founded as 'Studium Generale' for the public in 1293 and then re-founded in 1977. Universidad Complutense Madrid, with which RMIT partners, used the Alcalá buildings in during the 1700s before moving its campus to Madrid.
Universidad de Alcalá offers Undergraduate, Masters coursework and Doctoral programs in; Arts and Humanities, Health Sciences, Architecture & Engineering, Law & Social Sciences and Sciences.
University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka
University of Peradeniya, UoP is located in the city of Kandy, east of the commercial capital of Colombo. The Sri Lankan Ministry of Higher Education, recognises UoP as the top university in the country ahead of University of Colombo and University of Moratuwa. Universities of Peradeniya and Moratuwa in Sri Lanka attract the highest performing students of the country following the mathematics stream, with an intake of only 150 students every year at each institution for Civil Engineering. The Department of Building Economics in the Faculty of Architecture is also home to high quality undergraduates, several of whom are currently undergoing PhD training at RMIT. A joint PhD program will enable RMIT University to attract very high-quality students in both universities at a lower cost compared to the cost of an on-shore student.
University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka
University of Moratuwa, UoM is located in the city of Moratuwa, on the west coast of the country, just south of the commercial capital of Colombo.
The university is linked to the Government Technical College which was established in 1893. The institution has undergone several name changes, mergers, separations and location changes during the early to mid-1900. The university was then established in its current location in 1978, under Sri Lankan Universities Act No. 16 and operates under the Universities Grants Commission.
The Sri Lankan Ministry of Higher Education, recognises UoM as in the top three universities in the country behind University Peredeniya and University of Colombo. UoM also has Faculty of Graduate Research which is to promote a culture of postgraduate research and has a similar remit to RMIT's R&I Portfolio.
