What is an apprenticeship or traineeship?

Discover how apprenticeships and traineeships let you earn while you learn, gain real-world skills and kickstart a career you’re actually into.

What are apprenticeships and traineeships?

If you like the idea of learning real skills in a real job and making money at the same time, an apprenticeship or a traineeship could be the way to go.

Both apprenticeships and traineeships are a pathway to a trade or skilled profession. They’re a combination of paid work for an employer and institutional study, which leads to a nationally recognised qualification.

Whether you’re starting out as someone learning to fix engines, design digital content or support people in a care setting, you might be surprised where this experience can lead you.

Apprenticeships and traineeships in Victoria

In Victoria, there are more than 500 types of apprenticeships and traineeships across a huge range of industries. Whether you’re into working with your hands, solving technical problems or supporting people, there’s an option that suits your interests.

Some RMIT courses can be undertaken as part of an apprenticeship or traineeship. These courses allow you to work while studying, so you can apply what you learn immediately on the job.

What’s the difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship?

Both apprenticeships and traineeships combine practical work experience with formal training, but there are some key differences.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships usually cover skilled trades such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters, hairdressers and chefs. They often take 3-4 years to complete and include on-the-job training as well as structured study.

Traineeships

Traineeships tend to be shorter (often 1-2 years) and focus on roles in areas like dental assisting and surveying. They’re a great way to get a foot in the door, gain experience and earn a nationally recognised qualification.

Pre-apprenticeships

You might also come across pre-apprenticeships. These are short courses (often under 6 months) that give you a taste of a particular trade and help you build foundational skills before starting a full apprenticeship.

Degree apprenticeships

Degree apprenticeships are a blend of study and work. You will earn while you learn, graduating from RMIT with five years' work experience in your industry, plus two globally recognised qualifications.
