To help our students realise their enormous potential, RMIT is committed to promoting both student and staff mental wellbeing. We are passionate about RMIT being a supportive, diverse and inclusive place to learn, research and work.
To achieve this vision, RMIT has prioritised staff and student mental wellbeing initiatives.
The University recognises students’ mental health and wellbeing as a core institution-wide priority.
In this context RMIT’s Academic Board endorsed the Framework for Promoting Student Mental Wellbeing in Universities (PDF 480KB) to guide RMIT's strategic action.
The latest research and our own data confirm that the topic of student mental wellbeing holds both great challenge and bright opportunity. We are determined to take on the challenges laid out in Dr Benjamin Veness’ The Wicked Problem of University Student Mental Health (PDF 979KB) and to do this work in close partnership with students and and staff.
We have formed a Mental Wellbeing Advisory Group and mapped high-level priorities and an implementation plan for the immediate future. Work is already underway on:
RMIT is committed to enhancing our health, safety and wellbeing performance standards, systems, strategies, processes and outcomes. To help us achieve this aim, we have implemented a whole-of-institution Global Safety Model.
Staff mental wellbeing is an important part of our integrated approach to health, safety and wellbeing. We know that a mentally healthy workplace bring benefits for our staff and our institution.
The Global Safety Model provides a framework for our staff to embed Health, Safety and Wellbeing into the way we operate. It supports staff with the tools and information they need to manage risks, incidents and hazards in effective and consistent ways.
The model also allows RMIT to plan for and support staff wellbeing in both proactive and responsive ways. Staff at RMIT are supported through a range of ongoing health and wellbeing services, including:
