Theme

Accounting education reimagined: navigating the now, and shaping what’s next

Accounting education is undergoing a significant transformation in response to changing expectations from business and society (Tharapos, 2022). Increasingly, it emphasises multidimensional learning that prepares graduates to meet the profession’s new demands—developing not only technical expertise but also ethical integrity and social awareness (Carnegie et al., 2024).

Employers now seek professionals who think critically, adapt to change, and engage with sustainability challenges and data-driven decision-making (EY, 2025). Traditional pedagogical approaches, while foundational, often fall short in cultivating these attributes. Educational sectors are therefore called to reimagine curriculum design and learning environments, encouraging students to reflect on their evolving professional identities and their role in shaping a better future (Herbert et al., 2021).

By fostering curiosity, collaboration, and purpose-driven thinking, accounting education can equip learners not only to navigate change—but to lead it (Twyford et al., 2024).
