Singapore Business Internship

This elective is for Singapore students who are seeking opportunities in the workplace relevant to their discipline of study.

What does this unit involve?

This unit is an elective (BUSM4711) for students who want to find their own Industry Placement opportunity through the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program. Students are required to find a placement that is related to their field of study, and will undertake this under the guidance of a workplace mentor and with the support of academic and professional University Staff.

How many hours am I expected to do?

The total amount of time at the workplace is approximately 120 hours for BUSM4711, which is 1-2 days per week for 8-12 weeks. Additionally, students are expected to complete a further 20 hours on the assessments involved in this course.

You also have the option to undertake 240 hours through the BUSM4712 elective and to receive 24 credit points. You will find more information on this elective via the Assessment and coursework tab found on this page.

When can I undertake a placement?

Students in their penultimate or final semester can enrol into this elective course.

You can commence your placement once you have enrolled in the course and have worked through the administrative steps listed on the following pages. This includes having your placement approved by the Course Coordinator and ensuring the WIL Agreement has been completed.

What will I learn from this unit?

You will:

  1. Develop work-ready skills to assist you in preparing for internship applications, such as:

    • preparing a suitable curriculum vitae

    • successfully attending workplace interviews

    • meeting work requirements of regarding punctuality, appropriate workplace behaviour, respectful communications and expectations of quality work outcomes

  2. Apply your business major theory into workplace practice, through a supervised experiential learning in a workplace environment

  3. Participate effectively as a workplace team member through individual and group tasks

  4. Undertake reflective praxis in reviewing the value of work experience linked to the major area of business study.

1. Secure Your Own Placement

Once you secure a placement, make sure you collect the following details (you will need these for your application and agreement):

  • Host organisation name and address
  • Supervisor’s full name and contact details
  • Internship start and end dates
  • Location of placement (e.g., onsite, hybrid)
  • Agreed days and hours of work
  • Key tasks and responsibilities you will be undertaking

2. Apply to enrol in the Singapore Business Internship module (Modules: BUSM4711 or BUSM4712)

To apply, you must provide:

  1. An official Position Description (PD)
    • Must be on company letterhead and include your key tasks/responsibilities.
    • Must clearly state the number of hours or days of your internship.
  2.  Student Questionnaire
    • Download, complete, and submit this along with your PD.
  3. SIM Internship Approval Form
    • Submit your completed PD and questionnaire online via this form.
    • Your application will be reviewed by the Course Coordinator for approval.

3. Complete and sign the RMIT WIL Relationship Agreement

Once your internship is approved, you need to formalise it with RMIT:

  1. Complete the WIL Agreement with your placement details.
  2. Ask your host organisation to sign the WIL Agreement and attach the schedule for reference.

When you receive the final signed agreement back from RMIT:

  • Keep one copy for yourself.
  • Provide a copy to your host supervisor.

4. Start Your Placement & Complete Your Assessments

  • Once everything is approved and signed, you are ready to begin your internship.
  • If your placement begins before term starts, you can request early access to your assessments.
  • Make sure you read the assessment requirements carefully — you should start working on them during your internship.
  • When Canvas opens, submit all required assessments by the due dates.

Assessments have been designed to flow throughout your internship to maximise your learning and experience while on placement.

It is therefore strongly encouraged you complete the assessments while on placement. When term officially starts and Canvas opens, you can then simply submit your work you’ve already done!

Please ensure you complete all necessary assessment pieces on time.

Details: Discussion board posts, Four (4) Discussion board posts, choice of 6 topics 2 posts(7%) and 2 replies(3%) each required (Totalling 20%)

The objective of this task is to share a description of the major work-based projects on which you have been working during the internship and to communicate with fellow students’ information about: 

  • The nature of the project/s (objectives, measurement, construction etc); 
  • how discipline specific knowledge is employed I your internship 
  • your observations and insights (surprises/disappointments/challenges)

Details: Portfolio (1500±) (30%)

Please note that SIM Business Internship courses are currently only offered during the standard semester.

To qualify for the Singapore Business Internship you must: 

  • Be enrolled at Singapore Institute of Management.
  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Singapore.  International students are not eligible. 
  • Have an elective available in your program of study.

Any professional role in line with your academic study path eg Financial Assistant, Marketing Officer, Logistics co-ordinator, junior accountant etc.

Yes, provided it is relevant to your study path. Please submit the SIM Internship Approval Form with your position description and student questionnaire.

The internship hours must be completed within the official semester for which you enrol in your business internship course.

You may begin your role before the semester starts and/or continue working after the semester ends. However, any work hours outside the official semester dates are considered a private arrangement between you and your employer. For example, if you have a six-month contract from 3 January to 30 June, only the hours worked during the official semester period will count towards your internship requirements. Work completed after the semester ends (e.g., from 7 May to 30 June) will not be counted towards your internship.

Please keep in mind that if you are completing extra work hours you must be able to balance this with your studies. 

To enrol in a business internship course, please follow these steps:

  1. Secure an internship that will take place during the semester in which you intend to enrol.
  2. Submit your internship approval form, including the following documents:
  • Position description including:
    • Company’s letterhead
    • Company’s Unique Entity Number (UEN) and address
    • A list of your key responsibilities
    • Name and contact details of your supervisor
    • Estimated weekly working hours
  • Student questionnaire (PDF 280 KB)

After you submit the form, the CoBL WIL team and program coordinator will review your application and contact you regarding the next steps and outcome.

Yes.  As long as you have an elective available you can apply for the Business Internship.

No. You do not have to complete a Business Internship to complete your degree, it is your choice if you have an elective free.

You will receive a grade for the internship elective.

You will not be able to enrol for an internship if you do not have any electives remaining to complete. However, you can do an internship not-for-credit. This will not be monitored by RMIT.

Yes, you will pay fees for this internship course as you would for any other course.

You may check your enrolment info on SIMConnect or myRMIT. It will state the exemptions you have received and how many electives you will need to complete, if any.

You can contact SIM Career Connect for support, but you are responsible for sourcing your own internship.

You will need electives remaining to enroll for an internship. You can consider declining one of the credit transfer/exemption you have received to sign up for an internship. Please contact singapore@rmit.edu.au if you require further information/assistance on this.

Students may only complete one of the business internship course per semester.  If you wish to complete both internship courses you may do this in different semesters provided you have enough electives.  You must have a different role for each internship, although this may be with the same company, provided the duties are significantly different.

Once we have received all the appropriate documents we endeavour to give student an outcome within 5 business days.  However at times when we have a large volume of enquiries this may take longer.
