Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education

The Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education (GD204) program is designed based on 3B’s Belonging, Being and Becoming from Australia’s National “Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)” for early childhood. This program is designed to support you to work as a professional early childhood teacher (ECT) in the early childhood contexts. You will be equipped with the necessary critical and pedagogical strategies to become an effective teacher across a range of early childhood settings. Based on EYLF, this program prepares you to extend and enrich learning across the curriculum for infants, toddlers, and young children from birth to five years. You must have successfully completed an Australian bachelor's degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in any discipline for enrolling this program. International Degrees need to be assessed at Australian equivalency. The Graduate Diploma in Early Childhood Education has English language requirements which are specific to this degree. 

GD204 is externally accredited by the Australian Children's Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). Graduates are eligible to apply for registration as an early childhood teacher with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). At the end of your studies, you'll be qualified to teach in early childhood setting in Victoria (birth to 5 years) and hold transferrable skills to work here. If you are interested in teaching outside of Victoria or overseas, registration will be subject to the criteria of the relevant state or overseas accrediting authorities. You are encouraged to contact the relevant authority to determine if this qualification will allow you to teach in their jurisdiction. 

This is a one-year program. You have option to enrol in part time and full-time study mode. Classes are schedule both online and f2f. There are five courses in this program (flexi mode). We offer you 60 days of professional placement, giving you the opportunity to gain real-world experience. RMIT has strong and active relationships with many partners from early childhood services, which help us to find you the most valuable professional experience placements. Three courses among five courses are placement component. Placement team allocate students placement if they are in Melbourne metropolitan area. We use variety of learning experiences to teach the courses. For example, you will engage in different class activities, videos, readings and problem-based case studies. Some courses are offered in intensive mode to facilitate a balance between theory and practice across the program. We design our program based on different learning spaces. These are 

  • Problem-based learning 

  • Research based learning and 

  • Industry- connected learning  

Upon completion of the program, you will become an innovative and attuned professional teacher in the field of early years education (birth to five years) with an edu-portfolio that represents your professional narrative that you will be able to share proudly with potential employers. You will also have the knowledge, skills and experience to work in private enterprise, government agencies and community based early childhood education settings locally and globally.  You will have lots of job opportunity in this industry, particularly announcement of 3yr and 4yrs funded offer from Victorian Govt. and shortage of educators in EC opened opportunity to work in this industry.
