Recognised qualifications and English speaking countries

You may be able to meet RMIT's English language requirements if your previous studies were taught and assessed in English and meet the recognition criteria.

Follow the steps below to understand whether your prior study can be used as evidence.

Step 1: Check whether you studied in an RMIT-recognised English-speaking country

RMIT recognises the following countries as English-speaking for the purpose of meeting English requirements through prior approved study.

  • Canada (excluding Quebec)
  • New Zealand
  • United Kingdom (including  Northern Ireland) and Republic of Ireland
  • United States of America
  • Antigua + Barbuda
  • Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Belize
  • Botswana
  • Cook Island
  • Fiji
  • Gambia
  • Ghana
  • Gibraltar
  • Grenada
  • Guyana
  • Kenya
  • Kiribati
  • Lesotho
  • Liberia
  • Malawi
  • Mauritius
  • Namibia
  • Nigeria
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Samoa
  • St Kitts and Nevis
  • St Lucia
  • Sierra Leone
  • Singapore
  • Solomon Islands
  • South Africa
  • Tanzania
  • Tonga
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Uganda
  • Zambia
  • Zimbabwe

Step 2: Review the eligibility criteria that apply to where you studied

Select the option below that matches where you completed your studies.

If your studies were completed in a country not listed above, you may still meet RMIT's English language requirements if:

  1. your qualification was taught and assessed entirely in English
  2. the IELTS score requirement for your chosen course is 6.5 or lower.

If your course requires an IELTS score of 7.0 or above is required, you must provide a recognised English proficiency test, even if your previous studies were taught entirely in English.

Eligibility criteria

You must have completed at least one of the following:

  • One year of a tertiary qualification equivalent to an Australian Diploma or higher (within the past two years)
  • One semester full-time study of a university postgraduate qualification (within the last two years)
  • A Bachelor degree or higher recognised by RMIT (within the past five years)
  • A senior secondary qualification recognised by RMIT (within the last two years unless stated otherwise).

Your institution may need to provide an official letter that confirms that your studies were fully taught and assessed in English. The final assessment and decision will be made by RMIT.

Please note:

If you have more than one form of evidence to demonstrate English proficiency, RMIT will assess only your most recent result. A grace period may apply if these are completed within 3 months of each other.

Eligibility criteria

If you completed your schooling in a recognised English-speaking country, you may meet RMIT's English requirement if:

  • you completed at least six years of primary and/or secondary education in a recognised English-speaking country, AND
  • at least two of those years were at secondary or senior secondary level (or equivalent), AND
  • your studies were taught and assessed entirely in English, AND
  • you achieved the required English results in your senior high school qualification (or equivalent).

To be assessed under this category, you must provide a proof of studies and/or National identification (ID), or visa as proof of citizenship/residency.

If you do not achieve the required English results

If you do not meet the required English results from high school studies, you may still meet RMIT's English requirement if you successfully complete:

  • At least two university-level subjects (24 RMIT credit points) at Australian undergraduate level (or overseas equivalent), or
  • An Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) accredited award at certificate IV or higher (or overseas equivalent).

How to check English requirements for your qualification

If you are using a recognised qualification, please note that the English requirements vary by region. To meet RMIT’s English language requirements, you will need to check whether:

  • your qualification is recognised by RMIT, and
  • you have achieved the minimum English score required for your level of study.

Check the regional qualification guides below for details.
