non/fictionLab Public Forum: "Approaching Facts: Essay, Poetry, Journalism"

The non/fictionLab invites you to join our first session in the 2022 Public Forum Series. Our three speakers will reflect on "dealing with facts" through writing practice and discuss the limits and possibilities of the specific forms in which they write - creative non-fiction, poetry and journalism respectively.

Convened by Jessica Wilkinson, with guest speakers, Delia Falconer, Kent MacCarter and Lisa Waller.

Speakers:

Delia Falconer is senior lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney in the Department of Journalism and Writing. Her research interests focus on creative nonfiction and the Anthropocene. She has published two novels and two nonfiction works and in 2018 won the Walkley-Pascall Award for Arts Criticism. Her most recent book is Signs and Wonders: Dispatches from a Time of Beauty and Loss (2021).

Kent MacCarter is publisher of Cordite Books and managing editor of Cordite Poetry Review. He is author of three poetry collections: In the Hungry Middle of Here (Transit Lounge, 2009), Sputnik’s Cousin (Transit Lounge, 2014) and California Sweet (Five Islands Press, 2018). Kent guest co-edited the poetry for the 'Reportage' issue of Rabbit: a journal for nonfiction poetry, released in March 2022.

Professor Lisa Waller is Associate Dean, Communication, in the School of Media and Communication, RMIT University, Australia. She has taught and researched different aspects of Australian news media and journalism since 2006. Her practice led approach to understanding news is grounded in 20 years’ experience as a journalist at some of Australia’s leading newspapers.
