Professor Diana Bowman announced as inaugural Dean of Law

RMIT University has announced the appointment of Professor Diana Bowman as inaugural Dean of the School of Law, to commence in January 2026.

Professor Bowman joins RMIT’s College of Business and Law from the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University where she was Associate Dean of Applied Research and Partnerships, co-director for the Center for Smart Cities and Regions (CenSCR), and a professor in the School of Technology for Public Health.

This year, Professor Bowman was appointed Honorary Consul for Australia in Arizona and is a PLuS Alliance Fellow and a senior sustainability scientist in the Julie Ann Wrigley Global Institute of Sustainability.

"Returning to Melbourne and joining RMIT is both a homecoming and an incredible opportunity. I’m excited to lead a School of Law that’s bold in its vision — one that fuses technology, innovation and purpose to empower our students to drive change and shape the future of the legal profession," Professor Bowman said.

Professor Bowman’s extensive research has focused on the governance of emerging technologies and public health law. She has published more than 150 peer reviewed journal papers and chapters and is the co-editor of 11 books including Reproduction Report. In 2018, she was named as an Andrew Carnegie Fellow in recognition of the impact of her research.

College of Business and Law Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Colin Picker said he was thrilled with the appointment and looks forward to Professor Bowman’s leadership taking the new School of Law into the future.

"We are delighted to welcome Professor Bowman to RMIT as our inaugural Dean of Law. Her visionary approach and extraordinary track record in leadership and research will inspire our staff and students alike.

"Harnessing the great teaching and research already present, I am sure that the School of Law will grow from strength to strength under Professor Bowman’s leadership, and set new standards in legal education and innovation," Professor Picker said.

School of Law’s vision

Professor Bowman follows interim School of Law Deans, Professor Simon Pervan and Professor Lola Akin Ojelabi, who led the opening and establishment of RMIT’s new RMIT School of Law earlier this year, and builds on the university’s 60-year legacy in legal training and research.

The standalone School of Law, formerly a department in the Graduate School of Business and Law, brings together existing undergraduate and postgraduate programs alongside flagship RMIT research centres, the Business and Human Rights Centre and the Centre for Innovative Justice, at the historic and impressive Emily McPherson Building – now solely housing the standalone School of Law.
