The CAE scholarships are funded by RMIT University to support Africans who want to conduct PhD research that contributes to the development of the African continent and/or issues relating to Africans in the diaspora.
These scholarships are open to citizens of any African country who want to pursue a PhD at RMIT. The scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded based on academic excellence and research potential to Africans.

The scholarship provides tuition fees for a period of 3.5 years and a stipend of $35,886 per annum (2025 rate indexed annually).

  • Meet the minimum requirements for admission to a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program at RMIT. Details are available on the How to apply page
  • Be a citizen of an African country.

This scholarship is supporting the project titled: "Junior Black Rhinos: Building the impact evidence for supporting inclusive education", which has specific eligibility requirements.

Scholarship applications must include evidence of contact with the proposed senior supervisor. Please contact Dr Ronnie Egan (ronnie.egan@rmit.edu.au) and submit the following documents:

  • A brief overview of your motivation and suitability for this PhD project
  • A detailed CV including academic achievements & research experience
  • Academic certificates and transcripts.

The ideal candidate should have a strong interdisciplinary background bridging wellbeing, social and public policy, human development, and education, with proven interest in social change in Africa or an African country and issues relating to Africans in the diaspora.

Relevant Academic Qualifications

Relevant undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the fields of:

  • Social Sciences (e.g., Anthropology, Sociology)
  • Social and Public Policy
  • Education.

Wellbeing Ideal set of capabilities: 

  • Strong research and analytical skills 
  • Ability to design and conduct mixed-methods research (quantitative and qualitative), including surveys, interviews, and co design.

Professional and industry experience: 

  • Professional qualification and/or relevant industry experience in social work, education, psychology, mental health in any African country
  • Policy and communication insight
  • Ability to translate research findings into policy recommendations and strategic communication.
