Free at TAFE is an initiative by the Victorian government to waive course fees for skill sets for eligible applicants.

Skill sets are designed to equip students with industry-relevant skills and knowledge. These courses may be short in duration or delivered over a number of block sessions or months, and are not standalone qualifications.

Frequently asked questions

Any Australian citizen or permanent resident or a New Zealand citizen is eligible for Free at TAFE skill sets if they meet the following criteria:

  • Location: You must be physically present in Victoria to attend all of your study.

  • Education history:

    • You must not have started, or be due to start, more than two skill sets in a government subsidised place in the same calendar year*, and

    • You must not be currently enrolled in two or more skill sets or qualifications in government subsidised places at the same time*, and

    • You must not be currently enrolled in secondary school.

*some exceptions apply

Free at TAFE is an initiative offered by the Victorian Government to waive the course fees for select skill sets for eligible students. 


Free TAFE applies to qualifications only, and allows students to enrol in one Free TAFE qualification to further their skills, knowledge and interests. Learn more about Free TAFE.

No. Participation in these skill sets will not impact your entitlement to study a Free TAFE course in the future. There is no cap on the number of skill sets you can enrol in under the Free at TAFE initiative. You may enrol in a Free TAFE qualification in addition to your Free at TAFE skill set.
