You will learn from current practicing youth workers who are well connected within the industry. Guest lecturers will provide relevant and up-to-date information about current practice within industry.
Learning at RMIT is delivered through a hybrid and flexible model designed to support meaningful engagement with staff, industry, and peers. Depending on the course structure, you will participate in both on-campus and online learning. This typically includes a combination of face-to-face classes (for example, 2 days on campus) and scheduled online learning (such as one day from home).
Online learning may involve recorded lectures, readings, videos, and interactive activities, providing greater flexibility and accessibility. However, on-campus attendance remains compulsory for activities that require in-person participation, including role plays, simulations, practical classes, and assessments where applied skills must be demonstrated.
You should also be aware that if a scheduled on-campus class is moved online for operational or flexibility reasons, attendance and active participation are still required. The expectations for attendance apply equally to both face-to-face and scheduled online sessions.

Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.
Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

If you have completed a Certificate IV in Youth Work or another relevant certificate, this diploma includes 2 days per week on-campus (6 hours per day).
If you have not completed a Certificate IV in Youth Work or another relevant certificate, you can expect to attend 3 days per week on-campus or online (6 hours per day).
In addition, you will complete 100 hours of work placement outside classroom time, and you can anticipate up to 10 hours of additional study time per week to complete assessments.
This course is competency-based and has been designed to help you develop the practical skills and knowledge necessary to work effectively in your chosen field. You will learn and be assessed by practising and demonstrating your capabilities, all of which can be readily applied in the workplace.
In addition to the specific vocational skills you build throughout this course, you will also develop a set of essential employability skills, including communication, planning, organising, and problem solving, self-management, initiative and teamwork. These foundational skills will enable you to navigate the world of work, collaborate effectively with others, and successfully get the job done.
You will study the knowledge and principles underpinning holistic, strength-based practice.
Themes include case management, community development, effective communication, mental health, crisis intervention, legal and ethical issues, government and organisational structure and outreach work.

You must present evidence of a successful Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check prior to undertaking the clinical components of this course.
Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Checks are conducted via fit2work. An account with fit2work will be created using your name and RMIT-issued student email address once you have commenced your studies. Further information will be provided once enrolment has been completed.
You may be required to apply for and receive an acceptable NDIS Worker Screening Check prior to undertaking professional placement with an NDIS provider as part of this course.
