Overview

This practical, studio-based course gives you access to state-of-the-art facilities and industry-connected instructors to expand your textile skills and knowledge.

Learn to create designs for knitted, woven and printed fabrics or textile products within a range of contexts, including fashion, interiors, homewares, craft and other commercial applications.

You will develop your creative practice through:

  • drawing, painting and illustration
  • studio classes (print, knit and weave)
  • design and concept development
  • experimental textile samples using a range of materials and processes
  • textile knowledge and contemporary sustainable practices
  • presenting concepts using computer-aided design techniques

With a focus on industry standards, you will have opportunities to develop a collection of textiles to technical and market specifications.

You'll also explore the broader industry, including global and local sustainable concepts and innovations, clean manufacturing opportunities, circular systems, digital technologies and ethical considerations.

Why study apparel, fashion and textiles at RMIT?

Facilities

RMIT's Brunswick campus has a wide variety of specialist equipment for making textiles from print, knit and weave to experimental textile development.

Specialist expertise

Learn from experts in their field – teachers who are also practitioners in the textiles creative industry.

Global perspective

Complete your studies with a clear vision of how you can be a part of better textile decisions that can affect sustainability, ethical sourcing and future industry viability.

Deepen your knowledge, strengthen your skills

Once you have acquired the core skills, you will deepen your knowledge of print, weave and knit through studio classes where you will create samples and products. Throughout the studio experience, you'll be challenged to connect your design ideas with real-world textile challenges, exploring how your creativity can shape innovative solutions for the future.

You can expect to build strong knowledge sets around notions of responsible textile design and understanding the impacts of fibre properties. Adaptable and diverse knowledge will be developed through design processes that support creativity, critical thinking and problem solving.

When you successfully complete the diploma, you will be invited to join the graduate exhibition which is held at the end of each year.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.
