The Capitol Theatre Orchestra plus The Sound of Music (1965)

Join us at The Capitol for an unforgettable afternoon of live music by The Capitol Theatre Orchestra and a screening of the legendary classic film The Sound of Music (1965).

Melbourne’s iconic Capitol Theatre, now celebrating 100 years of cultural excellence, is proud to announce the next installment of The Capitol Theatre Orchestra. In a powerful tribute to classic cinema and live performance, The Capitol Theatre Orchestra will open the afternoon with a spirited performance of 1920s-style jazz, setting the stage for a screening of the timeless classic The Sound of Music (1965).

Revived as part of The Capitol’s centenary celebrations, The Capitol Orchestra reclaims its historic role, echoing the vibrant sounds that once filled theatres across the nation. The original Capitol Theatre Orchestra debuted in 1924 during The Capitol’s grand opening and now, 100 years later, it’s back to recapture the magic of the roaring 1920s.

The Sound of Music (1965) features Maria, a free-spirited governess, breathes life and joy into the strict von Trapp household. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of 1930s Austria, her transformative influence and the unifying power of music inspire a journey of love, courage, and unity in the face of looming challenges.
