Campaign Conduct Guideline

Council and Academic Board

Under the RMIT Elections Regulations, Division 3 Section 28 (1), Candidates must ensure their conduct throughout the elections process accords with the law, the University legislation, the RMIT Code of Conduct and the relevant policies and procedures.

In addition, Candidates are expected to conduct their candidacy in a respectful, ethical and collegial manner.

Candidates are required to complete and submit the nomination form by the stated deadline, any amendments or information received after this point will NOT be accepted.

Voters will be sent an email when voting opens that contains a link to the online voting system (which will contain details of candidates, their candidate statement and photo).

Candidates must comply with any reasonable direction of the Returning Officer in relation to campaign conduct or campaign material.

The following activities are not permitted in the context of individual campaigning:

Accessing RMIT student contact details that are not available to all students or accessing RMIT distribution lists to send campaign emails

Using RMIT servers or systems to build, maintain or host a campaign website

Badging personal campaign websites to look like official RMIT websites.

Interfering with the campaign activities of other candidates

Publish untrue, defamatory or discriminatory statements or engage in any form of harassment, intimidation or bullying.

Campaigning in libraries, computer laboratories, classrooms or during online class/tutorial sessions.

Using any means to apply pressure on a person to vote, or to vote for or against a particular candidate.  Candidates and their supporters are prohibited from soliciting votes from voters by means of providing a mobile electronic device to enable voting in the presence of the candidate or their supporter.

When communicating campaign material by email, candidates must ensure that emails including campaign material are sent only by the candidate personally.  Students sending campaigning emails should be careful of not badgering students and respect any requests from students who do not wish to receive further communication.

Consequences of non-compliance

Candidates are responsible for the actions of those campaigning on their behalf.

Non-compliance with these requirements may result in candidate’s disqualification from the election.

If this noncompliance has compromised the outcome of the election the Returning Officer is able to declare an election void and disqualify candidates from renominating in future elections.
