Notice of elections 2025. Find out when and how to self-nominate and vote in the 2025 elections for RMIT Council and Academic Board and Standing Committees.

RMIT Council

RMIT Council is the governing body of the University; its responsibilities are set out within the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Act 2010 and include oversight and review of the management, performance and corporate activities of the University.   • Elected student member of RMIT Council

The elected student term of appointment is for a one-year period commencing 1 November 2025 and concluding 31 October 2026.

All eligible persons may self-nominate by completing the online nomination form.

Student elected position:

To be eligible for the student elected position, a person must:

  • Be enrolled as a student of RMIT University for the duration of the term of appointment and maintain an enrolment load of at least 0.5 EFTSL, or hold a university approved absence for a student leadership role;  
  • Have maintained an enrolment load of at least 0.5 EFTSL over the year preceding the term of office, or hold a university approved absence for a student leadership role;
  • Must be enrolled in a Coursework or Higher Degree by Research award offered by the University;            
  • Be located in Australia; 
  • Not be a director of another educational institution; 
  • Satisfy the fit and proper person requirements specified by TEQSA
  • Provide a statement that the candidate will, during the election period, and if successful, during the term on Council, comply with the requirements of the RMIT Act 2010, the University’s statute, regulations and policies and will complete governance training as determined by Council.

Completed nomination forms must be received by the Returning Officer no later than 12 noon on the 25 September 2025.

Academic Board and Standing Committees

The Academic Board is the principal academic governing body responsible for oversight of RMIT's academic affairs across the RMIT Group. The Academic Board has established three standing committees that provide advice and support to the Board: 

  • Education Committee
  • Programs Committee 
  • Research Committee 

These three standing committees are supported by several subcommittees, including the Graduate Research Committee (a sub-committee of the Research Committee).

Academic Board

  • One (1) Head of School, Dean or Executive Dean from each higher education college elected by the academic staff of each college
  • Two (2) senior academics/teaching staff in a non-executive role from each college elected by the academic and teaching staff of each college
  • Two (2) academic/teaching staff from each college, elected by the academic and teaching staff of each college
  • Six (6) members elected by and from the professors of the University occupying a Level E appointment, not including honorary or adjunct professors, with at least one (1) from each higher education college and no more than three (3) from one college
  • One (1) member elected by and from the postgraduate students of the University
  • One (1) member elected by and from the higher degree by research students of the University
  • Two (2) members elected by and from the undergraduate students of the University
  • Two (2) members elected by and from the students enrolled in VE or associate degree programs of the University

Education Committee

  • One (1) Academic Staff member, elected by and from the academic staff of the College of Business and Law for a two (2) year term of office
  • One (1) Academic Staff member, elected by and from the academic staff of the College of Design and Social Context for a two (2) year term of office
  • One (1) Academic Staff member, elected by and from the academic staff of the STEM College for a two (2) year term of office
  • One (1) Teaching Staff member, elected by and from the teaching staff of the College of Vocational Education for a two (2) year term of office
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of the College of Business and Law for a one (1) year term of office
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of the College of Design and Social Context for a one (1) year term of office
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of the STEM College for a one (1) year term of office 
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Vocational Education or associate degree program, elected by and from the Vocational Education or associate degree students of the College of Vocational Education

Programs Committee

  • One (1) Academic Staff member, elected by and from the academic staff of the College of Business and Law for a two (2) year term of office
  • One (1) Academic Staff member, elected by and from the academic staff of the College of Design and Social Context for a two (2) year term of office
  • One (1) Academic Staff member, elected by and from the academic staff of the STEM College for a two (2) year term of office
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of the College of Business and Law for a one (1) year term of office
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of the College of Design and Social Context for a one (1) year term of office
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Education program, elected by and from the Higher Education students of the STEM College for a one (1) year term of office

Research Committee

  • One (1) Academic Staff member, elected by and from the academic staff of the College of Business and Law for a two (2) year term of office
  • One (1) Academic Staff member, elected by and from the academic staff of the College of Design and Social Context for a two (2) year term of office
  • One (1) Academic Staff member, elected by and from the academic staff of the STEM College for a two (2) year term of office
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research program, elected by and from the Higher Degree by Research candidates of the College of Business and Law for a one (1) year term of office
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research program, elected by and from the Higher Degree by Research candidates of the College of Design and Social Context for a one (1) year term of office
  • One (1) student enrolled in a Higher Degree by Research program, elected by and from the Higher Degree by Research candidates of the STEM College for a one (1) year term of office

Graduate Research Committee

  • Higher degree by research candidates of the University, at either Masters or Doctoral levels, one each from enrolling schools across the three Colleges (College of Business and Law)
  • Higher degree by research candidates of the University, at either Masters or Doctoral levels, one each from enrolling schools across the three Colleges (College of Design and Social Context)
  • Higher degree by research candidates of the University, at either Masters or Doctoral levels, one each from enrolling schools across the three Colleges (STEM College)

The elected staff term of appointment is for a two-year period commencing 1 January 2026 and concluding 31 December 2027.

The elected student term is for a one-year period commencing 1 January 2026 and concluding 31 December 2026.

Staff elected positions:

  • Academic staff means those higher education employees of the University within the meaning of the collective agreement or award that applies to Higher Education employees, appointed to an established position and being not less than 0.5 of a full-time position.  
  • Teaching staff means those VE employees of the University within the meaning of the collective agreement or award that applies to VE employees appointed to an established position and being not less than 0.5 of a full-time position.  
  • Professional staff means those professional, administrative, clerical, computing and technical employees of the University within the meaning of the applicable collective agreement or award appointed to an established position and being not less than 0.5 of a full-time position.

Student elected positions:

  • Enrolled as a student of RMIT University for the duration of the term of appointment

The election process and key dates

The University has contracted BigPulse to administer the 2025 election.

Nominations

Dates:

Nominations for the Council, Academic Board and Standing Committee elections will open at 12noon AEST on 15 September 2025 and close at 12noon AEST on 25 September 2025

How to nominate:

Candidates may self-nominate by completing and submitting the online nomination form, which will be emailed to RMIT students and staff who may be eligible from 12noon AEST on Monday 15 September. Check your RMIT inbox for the email sent from ‘RMIT Elections’.

There are strict eligibility requirements for RMIT Council and Academic Board nominations. Please check the eligibility requirements above prior to completing a nomination form.

Nominations must be received by 12noon AEST on Thursday 25 September 2025.

Withdrawal of nomination:

A nominee may, no later than two (2) business days following the close of nominations, withdraw their nomination by notice in writing to the Returning Officer via elections@rmit.edu.au.

Election ballot

In the event a position receives surplus nominations (a contested election), an electronic ballot/vote will be conducted.

Dates: 

Voting for the Council, Academic Board and Standing Committee positions will open at 12noon AEST on 6 October 2025 and close at 12noon AEST on 13 October 2025.

How to vote: 

All eligible students and staff can vote by completing and submitting the online voting form, which will be emailed to all eligible RMIT students and staff from 12noon AEST on Monday 6 October. Check your RMIT inbox for the email sent from ‘RMIT Elections’.

Results declared

Results for the 2025 elections will be declared on 15 October 2025. Successful candidates, their positions and terms will be available via the RMIT Elections Register.
