Implementing OPCAT in Australia

RMIT Researchers

  • Professor Bronwyn Naylor
  • Professor Penelope Weller

Project Description

The Australian Government ratified the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT) in December 2017. OPCAT requires robust independent monitoring of places of detention to ensure that conditions and treatment within places of detention are respectful, safe and humane. As many prisons and other places of detention in Australia are privately run facilities, improving human rights of those in detention will require active collaboration with a range of businesses.
