Lovely Bibbles

Lovely Bibbles explores the embodiment of 'girliness' and new expressions of 'girlhood' in art. Focusing on interweaving painting and sculptural methodologies, this work challenges the dismissal of feminine-like aesthetics.

Opening celebration night

Date: Wednesday 16 October

Time: 5 - 7pm

Many symbols associated with femininity such as love hearts, sparkles, stars, and the ‘barbie-esque’ are dismissed as frivolous. Through the construction of alternate environments, or worlds, ‘girly’ cliches can become powerful symbols of feminism and reveal the historical persecution of the hyper-feminine. The work contends that all forms of femininity are powerful symbols of beauty and anti-patriarchal expressions.

Informed by Becky Francis et al.'s work on the denigration of 'girly' characteristics, as well as insights from artists like Lily van der Stokker, Sylvie Fleury, and Kathy Temin. By employing abstracted amorphous shapes, bold colours, and tactile materials; like silicone, this project endeavours to engage viewers on a sensory and intellectual level and reframe their perceptions of 'girly' aesthetics.
