Dr Qiu turned over a new leaf in his career after joining RMIT University in January 2015. His primary role as a VC’s Senior Research Fellow is to conduct cutting-edge research in the field of materials and manufacturing engineering, which is aligned with RMIT’s strategic plan on innovative manufacturing.
In the last 20 years since Dr Qiu was awarded a PhD, his research has spanned a range of areas, such as grain refinement of cast alloys, crystallography in solid–solid phase transformations and surface modification of biomedical implants. His contribution to the research community is witnessed by more than 130 peer-reviewed journal papers, with 1 published in Nature, 4 published in Nature Communications, and 18 out of these published in Acta Materialia, the best journal in the field of physical metallurgy worldwide. His publications have been cited more than 9000 times and his H-index is 48 on Google Scholar. He has also succeeded in obtaining 10 competitive grants in the last ten years, including three under the ARC Discovery scheme and one under the ARC Linkage scheme.
Dr Qiu’s specific expertise rests on the following elements:
• Characterise interphase crystallography by using a variety of microscopic techniques
• Explain morphological features of secondary phases in multi-phase materials
• Exploit crystallographic models to design potent grain refiners for cast alloys
• Produce porous and functional coating on the surface of biomedical implants.
Dr Qiu’s current interests include:
• Microstructure evolution during metal additive manufacturing (AM) processes.
• New alloy design tailored for metal AM processes.
• Improving alloy's performance under extreme servicing conditions.
• Sustainable manufacturing innovation reducing carbon footprint.
