The Bachelor of Health, Physical Education and Sport focuses on teaching practice, and aims to prepare you to work in the dynamic and challenging world of education.

The Bachelor of Health, Physical Education and Sport (Secondary)  has been designed to equip you with the professional knowledge and practical skills you need to teach in diverse school settings. 

Utilising a strong core curriculum with an explicit focus on teaching practice, and you will learn to use a range of teaching strategies that engage your students' needs, use assessment and data to inform practice, and use critical reflection to impact the future of your classroom. 

Throughout this degree, you will:

  • complete over 80 days of teaching practice to gain real-world experience and graduate classroom-ready
  • study three teaching methods, for health, physical education, and one elective subject area
  • gain sports coaching experience
  • have the option to undertake accelerated learning to complete your degree in 3.5 years.

Learning and teaching

RMIT offers a variety of learning and teaching approaches including lectures, seminars, workshops, presentations, and practical group work.

You’ll study in up-to-date learning and teaching facilities, including the Bundoora Netball and Sports Centre, as well as cutting edge FIFA-approved synthetic playing fields. You'll also have access to online resources. Throughout your studies, you will undertake 80+ days of teaching practice, and have the opportunity to study one elective teaching area, including biology or maths.

You can also choose to take an accelerated course, completing your degree in just 3.5 years.

Assessment methods

Ongoing assessment throughout the semester includes examinations, essays, reports, oral classes, presentations, group projects, research projects, laboratory projects and practical assignments.

Learning at RMIT

The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.

Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.

RMIT HPES students are recognised industry leaders, and as such you will complete school-based placements culminating in an extended block placement in your final semester.

These sequential placements allow you to integrate theory to practice, and develop your teaching skills over the duration of the course. You'll graduate fully prepared to teach.

There is an opportunity for a small group of students to teach in a secondary college in Singapore in the final year. There may also be options to complete a semester or a full year at a university in Europe, the USA or Canada.

Previous participating tertiary institutions include Leeds Metropolitan University, Pennsylvania State University, Florida State University, University of West Virginia, University of British Columbia, and University of Alberta.

Global work, exchange and study experiences

Year 1

In the first year of this degree, you will complete eight core subjects and two elective subjects introducing you to the field of health, physical education and sport.

Year 2

In second year, you will undertake six core subjects and two elective subjects. Your electives will allow you to explore subjects in further detail, and span subjects including biological and social psychology, genetics and molecular biology, mathematics and statistics, and more.

Year 3

In third year, you will complete eight core subjects and explore professional experience and global health issues.

Year 4

In the fourth year of this degree, six core subjects and one elective will expand your knowledge and skills in this field and prepare you for a rewarding career in health, physical education and sport.

Graduates go on to teach in three subject areas, including health, physical education, and the subject area of your choosing. The degree is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).

You must have successfully completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) (or equivalent qualification).

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) units 3 and 4:

  • a study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL; or
  • a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL)

or equivalent studies.

AND

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Units 1 and 2: 

  • satisfactory completion in two units (any study combination) of Maths: General Mathematics, Maths: Mathematical Methods or Maths: Specialist Mathematics; or

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) Units 3 and 4:

  • satisfactory completion of any Mathematics

or equivalent studies.

Rankings and adjustment factors

Entry to this program is competitive. Eligible applicants are ranked and selected in order of merit based on their academic achievement plus any adjustment factors.

We will consider your entire academic record to determine your eligibility for entry. The highest level of education you have previously completed will usually determine how you are ranked.

Selection task

You must sit the Casper test. Casper is a requirement for many of the initial teacher training programs in Victoria. It is a non-cognitive online test designed to assess your personal and professional attributes.

  • The SNAP access scheme is designed to increase tertiary participation by giving priority access to RMIT diploma and degree programs to eligible applicants currently studying Year 12 at a SNAP partner school.

Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students*

The Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is a national test required by the Federal Government that all pre-service teachers must complete to be able to graduate and register as a teacher. The test is administered by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). You are able to sit the test up to three times before you need to seek further approval to complete a fourth or fifth (final) attempt. Please note that you are required to be physically in Australia to undertake this test at a test centre. Counselling and support for those failing the test will be available.

You are able to sit your LANTITE test before you enrol in your degree. This will provide you with the result early. If you are not successful on your first attempt, this will enable you and your lecturers to identify the areas you need to focus on in your studies. You are encouraged to complete your LANTITE test by the end of your first year of your studies.

Understanding pathways

Undertaking a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree can help you meet the entry requirements for your preferred course. These qualifications often provide credit, reducing the duration of your bachelor degree.

This course offers pathway options. If you don’t meet the entry requirements, a formal pathway might be your way in.

Credit, recognition of prior learning, professional experience and accreditation from a professional body can reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant experience.

Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of the RMIT Credit Policy.

When you successfully complete this degree, you may be eligible for entry into an RMIT Honours or Postgraduate degree.

You can gain entry to this degree from RMIT Foundation Studies or a range of vocational study programs.

Credit may reduce the duration of your study by acknowledging your earlier, relevant study experience.

Fees

2024 indicative fees

In 2024, the annual student contribution amount (tuition fee) you will pay for a standard year of full-time study is between AU$4,445 to AU$16,323*.

Additional expenses

  • Student services and amenities fee (SSAF): AU$351 maximum fee for 2024.
  • Other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment.

Annual fee adjustment

Amounts quoted are indicative fees per annum, and are based on a standard year of full-time study (96 credit points). A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load.

Fees are adjusted on an annual basis and these fees should only be used as a guide.

Defer your payment

You may be eligible to apply for a HECS-HELP loan, which can be used to defer payment of up to the full amount of your student contribution fees. You may also be eligible to apply to defer payment of your SSAF through the SA-HELP loan scheme.

If you are offered a Commonwealth supported place, your tuition fees are subsidised by the Australian Government.

Your share of the fee (student contribution) is set on an annual basis by the government and is determined by the discipline areas (bands) of your individual enrolled courses, not the overall program.

The Australian Government has introduced changes to university funding and student contribution fees under its Job-ready Graduates Package

The fees in the table below apply to students who commence their program in 2024. Fees for continuing students are available at fees for Commonwealth supported students.

Each course (subject) falls into a band. The band determines the student contribution amount for the course.

Amounts listed in the table below are based on a standard, full-time study load (96 credit points per year) with all courses in the same band. A proportionate fee applies for more or less than the full-time study load or for enrolment in courses (subjects) from a combination of bands.

Student Learning Entitlement

On 1 January 2022, the Government implemented the Student Learning Entitlement (SLE).

  • The SLE allows students 7 years of full-time subsidised study in Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP).
  • Your total SLE amount will be reduced in accordance with your overall study load in a CSP. 
  • Once you have utilised all your SLE, you can not longer study in a CSP.

HECS-HELP Loans

The Australian Government provides financial assistance via the HECS-HELP loan scheme, which allows eligible students (such as Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) to defer payment of up to the full amount of their student contribution.

SA-HELP Loans

You may be eligible to apply to defer payment of the Student services and amenities fee (SSAF) through the SA-HELP loan scheme. If you use SA-HELP, the amount will be added to your accumulated HELP debt.

How does a HELP loan work?

If your FEE-HELP and/or SA-HELP loan application is successful, the Australian Government will pay RMIT, on your behalf, up to 100% of your fees. This amount will become part of your accumulated HELP debt.

You only start repaying your accumulated HELP debt to the Australian Government once you earn above the minimum income threshold for repayment, which is set each year by the Australian Government (this also applies if you are still studying). The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will calculate your compulsory repayment for the year and include this on your income tax notice.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.

The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2024 is $351.

You may also be required to purchase other items related to your program, including field trips, textbooks and equipment. These additional fees and expenses vary from program to program.

The annual tuition fee for 2024 is AU$31,680.
