Whether you're an educator or an industry professional, the TAESS00019 Assessor Skill Set (S0189) equips you with the skills to assess in vocational education and training contexts.
This course is ideal for individuals who hold both a teaching qualification and registration with the relevant education body in their state or territory, as well as those with industry expertise looking to specialise in assessment.
You’ll gain the skills to:
Recent updates to the Standards for RTOs (effective 1 March 2024) now allow individuals with an education degree to teach in VET settings under supervision. By completing this skill set, you can teach and assess independently in VET.
Engage in practical, hands-on activities, including simulated examples, to build your skills in assessing competency. Bring your own real-world challenges into the learning environment to apply your knowledge in a meaningful and practical way.
Upon completion, you will be qualified to assess competency in nationally recognised training programs within vocational education settings. If you hold a teaching qualification, you may also train without supervision, further expanding your opportunities.
Collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds, including qualified educators and industry professionals, to exchange insights, share experiences, and develop best practices in assessment.
Flexible scheduling with face-to-face or online delivery. Includes scheduled contact hours and self-paced learning.
Learning activities across both options include discussions, quizzes, peer presentations, group work, simulations, and creating workplace documents. Activities and participant manuals must be completed before live sessions.
Ongoing assessment throughout this skill set includes written assessments in the form of knowledge questions, case studies, presentations, peer reviews and validation. All assessments are geared towards the theoretical and practical learnings you need to become a qualified VE assessor. Ongoing assessments include written tasks, case studies, presentations, peer reviews, and validation to assess both theoretical and practical skills. These assessments help prepare you to become a qualified VE assessor.
The types of classes you have will depend on the course you’re studying. Classes are offered in various formats designed to provide meaningful engagement with staff, industry and peers and provide for access and use of spaces where learning can be applied and active, including an array of specialised equipment.
Most RMIT courses do not include passive large-scale classes such as lectures, instead the content traditionally provided in lectures is made available online. This may be in the form of readings, videos or other on-demand learning materials. This content will also support the basis of interactive learning that takes place in on-campus classes.
This skill set is led by highly experienced and qualified trainers who model best practice in training skills.
You will have the opportunity to practise your skills in a supportive environment, as well as applying them in workplace-based assessment projects.

You should expect approximately 11 weeks of classes.
This skill set is offered as part of the RMIT Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and runs on specific dates each year. The usual completion time is a total of 3 months if undertaken full time.

You need to satisfy all of the following academic (entry) requirements to be considered for entry into this course.
To gain entry to this program you must demonstrate vocational competency in the area/industry that you wish to teach and assess. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience and may include, but is not limited to, holding a relevant unit of competency or qualification. You do not need to have prior experience in training and assessment.

A selection task is not required for entry into this qualification.
Undertaking a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree can help you meet the entry requirements for your preferred degree. These qualifications often provide credit, reducing the duration of your bachelor degree.

In addition to tuition fees, you will be charged an annual student services and amenities fee (SSAF), which is used to maintain and enhance services and amenities that improve your experience as an RMIT student.
The SSAF is calculated based on your enrolment load and the maximum fee for 2025 is $365.
Note: SSAF will be charged per nominal hour at a rate of $0.51 per hour in 2025.
