RMIT UP Welcomes First Guatefuturo Scholarship Recipients

RMIT University Pathways (RMIT UP) welcomed its first Guatefuturo-RMIT Scholarship students from Guatemala this year, beginning an exciting new era in international academic partnerships.

The Guatefuturo-RMIT Scholarship provides financial support to talented Guatemalan students who wish to pursue a Master's by Coursework or Research and PhD programs at RMIT University.

This scholarship is a joint initiative funded by RMIT and Fundación Guatefuturo—a nonprofit foundation supported by the Guatemalan government and prominent private-sector companies. Upon completing their studies, graduates return to Guatemala to contribute to the country's social, economic, and cultural development.

Carlos Fuentes and Andrea Guevara Beber are the first recipients of the Guatefuturo-RMIT Scholarship to complete their English language training at RMIT UP, as part of the scholarship bursary, before pathwaying into postgraduate degrees at RMIT.

Carlos, a Marketing graduate from Rafael Landivar University in Guatemala City, completed RMIT UP Level 7 English for Academic Purposes in February and is now studying towards a Masters in Analytics by coursework.

Carlos had a “blast” studying at RMIT UP and credits English for Academic Purposes for not only improving his English skills but giving him a head start at RMIT University.

English for Academic Purposes prepared me for university standards, providing me with a strong foundation for my studies at RMIT University. I feel that I have an extra advantage compared to other international students

“The teachers were supportive, and the classes were interactive, which helped improve my language skills quickly,” he says.

Carlos enjoyed RMIT UP’s central CBD location and fully embraced the wide range of experiences RMIT UP has to offer.

“The environment was diverse, and I loved the extra resources like cultural activities, weekly tutorials and academic support from Rowena (RMIT UP Academic Support Coordinator) – she’s a life saver!”

The campus is also in the heart of Melbourne, making it easy to attend classes and explore the CBD, and the high-tech facilities made the classrooms a better environment for studying.

“Participating in student activities, such as cultural events and sports, allowed me to make new friends and connect with other cultures. I also appreciated the Open Pantry, which offered free groceries and helped me manage my budget, get healthy food, or try something different.”

Equipped with valuable new skills, Carlos aims to complete his Masters in 2026 and eventually work in data analytics, using his sales experience to improve business strategies.

“Working in sales has shown me how valuable data is for making informed decisions, and I believe combining these skills will create great opportunities to optimise sales strategies and drive business growth.”

Reflecting on his time with RMIT UP, Carlos says the best thing about the course was the knowledge he gained and the opportunity to connect with new cultures.

“This experience was truly invaluable,” he says.

Carlos feels incredibly fortunate to have received the scholarship, which is helping him achieve his dreams. He advises future Guatefuturo – RMIT Scholarship recipients to stay focused and resilient through new challenges, using the opportunity to learn and grow.

"Winning the Guatefuturo scholarship is just the beginning," he says. "You'll face new challenges—whether it's finding a home, adjusting to a new culture, or balancing academic demands.

“Stay focused on your vision, trust in your ability to overcome obstacles, and always celebrate the small victories. This experience will shape you in ways you can’t yet imagine, so take every moment to learn, connect, and appreciate the adventure.

“You are here for a reason, so keep pushing forward with purpose and gratitude."
