Bachelor of Law / Bachelor of Business
Bachelor of Law / Bachelor of Business
My name's Hiba. I'm in my final year of law, economics and finance at RMIT. I did my internship at Anika Legal, one of RMIT's industry partners.
They're a community legal centre that aim to empower renters to feel safe and thrive in their homes. My motivation to do an internship as part of my degree was that I hadn't had any client-facing experience, and the experience that I did have was quite administrative, and I'd heard such great things from my peers who had also done an internship at Anika Legal, and so I knew this was something that was missing in my law school experience, and that's something that I had to do. So, I found my internship through the RMIT Job Board.
I went through the application process, filled out a couple forms, and before I knew it, I was handling my first case at Anika Legal. The things that I worked on at Anika Legal as part of my internship was drafting legal advice under supervision, conducting some legal research for the purposes of improving Anika Legal's services and handling client queries by email and phone.
I had two standout moments while at Anika Legal.
The first one was when one of my bonds matters settled, meaning the client was able to receive their full bond back, and the rental provider had withdrawn their VCAT claim. And my second standout moment was when I received my final feedback from my supervising lawyer. It was really great to see how much I'd improved over the past 6 weeks since my last feedback, and it was really amazing to see how much I'd progressed over that time.
Some of the skills that I developed was getting proficient in using legal technology. I was able to strengthen my attention to detail by managing multiple files across a period of time. Working with vulnerable clients and renters across Victoria has solidified my desire to work with the public and give back to the community, and that's something that I can see myself doing in the future as well.
I think what surprised me the most about doing an internship was the level of trust that was placed in student paralegals. Often times, you don't really get to interact with the public or give legal advice- of course under supervision. However, the level of exposure that I got by doing this kind of work was amazing and something that I would have never expected from an internship.
It may be a bit daunting at first, the idea of stepping into the real world, dealing with real people, real issues, but think of yourself as a sponge, just soaking up all the knowledge that you're going to gain at your internship. And there's going to be plenty of guidance and support that you're going to receive from people at your internship and our industry partners.
I had a phenomenal experience at Anika Legal.
I gained some practical skills that are required to be a successful lawyer in the future, and I had a direct impact on the community. There's nothing to be afraid of when doing an internship. You're going to learn so many things that you don't typically learn in a classroom environment or a lecture theatre.
Bachelor of Business- Professional Practice
Bachelor of Business- Professional Practice
My name is Sian. I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Business Professional Practice - Currently majoring economics with a minor in marketing finance.
I completed my internship at Bosch. This was specifically in the power tools division with a sales and marketing internship for key accounts.
What made me decide to do an internship as part of my degree was the ability to gain hands-on experience that you're not able to gain within a classroom, as well as the ability to graduate with experience on my resume, which will help me apply for future roles.
How I went about securing my internship was actively looking on platforms such as Seek, Indeed, or LinkedIn, as well as reaching out to family members or fellow co-workers to see if there's any potential internships or opportunities within their industry. The kind of work and responsibilities that I've had during my internship include key account management and managing all the back-end processes of the key account. This involves doing day-to-day pricing as well as helping respond to different queries or questions from the category managers. Other responsibilities I had as part of my internship role for key accounts included making PowerPoint slides for the sales team as well as helping facilitate new product launches and attending meetings.
A standout moment from my internship was helping to plan and prepare a national roll out. This included helping to prepare new marketing activities, new product launches, as well as new promotional activities. Throughout my internship, I developed strong communication skills, particularly learning how to work with and adapt to different personalities and communication styles, both internally within the team and externally with customers and stakeholders. The role also helped me strengthen my organizational and time management skills through balancing multiple projects, meetings, and deadlines at once. I became much more confident professionally, especially when contributing ideas and speaking up in meetings. In addition, the internship improved my analytical and problem solving abilities.
This experience has definitely influenced my future career goals. It confirmed my interest in pursuing a career in sales, marketing, and account management after graduation and has encouraged me to begin applying for graduate roles within the industry.
What surprised me most about doing an internship was the amount of responsibility and trust given to the interns within a professional workplace like Bosch. I was also surprised by how much even smaller tasks and projects could have on the wider business. Interns are not treated simply as students, but as valuable members of the team.
Lift helped me build my confidence and made me feel genuinely involved in the business. I would strongly recommend completing an internship to any student who is unsure about doing one. It provides a valuable industry experience, helps build confidence, and allows you to apply what you've learned at university. You can either source your own internship as I did or you can either go through RMIT Career Connect where they have access to industry partners.
Juris Doctor (Postgrad)
Juris Doctor (Postgrad)
My name is Em and I'm currently in my final year of my Juris Doctor and I completed my internship at Maurice Blackburn, which is Plaintiff Law firm. I wanted to get some practical experience, something out of the classroom and start to meet people. As they say, networking is really key. But yeah, just get some practical experience
in a law firm. I secured my internship by going onto the RMIT Careers Connect website, which was really helpful. I got an interview with Maurice Blackburn and heard back from them on the same day that I got the internship. During my internship, I was a paralegal intern with the Dust Diseases team. I was helping the lawyers draft submissions, answer questions from the other parties and assist with ad hoc tasks, including a lot of legal research.
A standout moment was the entire internship, to be honest. We were assisting clients in distressing situations. Often sometimes the clients were towards the end of life and needing to get compensation from their previous employer.
So being able to assist the lawyers in getting that compensation and truly have some life-changing results throughout that internship was really amazing. The skills I developed throughout the experience was definitely my research and writing skills. I feel like I was a new person in the way that I was able to help with the drafting of submissions and all of the other sorts of legal writing I was having to do. It was an exponential improvement, that's for sure.
The internship has impacted my future by giving me a job. I was able to secure a paralegal role in a social justice team at Maurice Blackburn, which has been amazing. Being able to work on lots of different types of matters and cases with lots of different lawyers, really focusing on First Nations and human rights, which has made me realise that that's what I'd love to do as a future career.
What surprised me most about doing my internship was how much I loved learning about the Law.
I love the practical nature of it. Being in that Law Firm environment and seeing everything that I've learned over the course of my Juris Doctor has come to fruition and how it's applied in the real world. And it's really reaffirmed to me how much I would love to work in human rights law in future.
If a student was unsure about doing an internship, I would say absolutely go for it. You will 100% forget about the really boring summer elective that you did, but you will not forget the connections that you make and all the different things that you get to learn.
If I had to sum up my internship in one sentence, it would be that it was deeply rewarding, fascinating, yet challenging and honestly one of the best decisions I've made for myself during this degree.
Bachelor of Business – Professional Practice
Bachelor of Business – Professional Practice
Hi, I'm Vanessa and I'm currently studying a Bachelor of Business Professional Practice, RMIT, and I'm currently majoring in Marketing and Global Business. I completed my internship at MEMKO as a Marketing assistant that they are a Melbourne based company specialising in technology, engineering and training. They focus on more complex industries like aviation, defence and construction. The reason why I wanted to do an internship was because I wanted the practical experience of a corporate life. I wanted to see the corporate world before I actually graduate and have the actual experience and I thought this was a great opportunity to do as part of my degree.
I secured my internship through RMIT's career board within the RMIT Careers Connect and the RMIT WIL team was able to help me through the interview process and secure this job. My roles were mainly focused on as a marketing assistant or mainly the marketing activities. This includes their LinkedIns, their website, and their YouTube channels. I also got to a lot of different events like the Avalon Air Show, Air India, and many different international events. The biggest standout moment was when I was able to help MEMKO through the process of the Avalon Air Show, which was helping them with flyers setting up the stands as part of their collaboration with the Australian Government Defence Team.
I learned so much how we could go through such a big event with so many different processes and get your hands on experience. The skills I learned were developing through my internship with data analysis. I wasn't really too big on numbers, but through this process, I've realised the importance of numbers through marketing.
And it's not just social media. I’ve developed an interest in numbers and what they could predict in the future.
This has definitely changed my career path a lot. I initially thought I would do business to consumer- the typical Instagram, TikTok, but then after taking the internship, I've developed my interest in business to business and exploring the more connection in business-based marketing.
What surprised me the most was I always thought internships were like sharpening pencils on the side and just watching people, but actually, it was a really hands-on experience. They actually are willing to give you the opportunity to learn and thrive and actually value your opinion a lot. I gained so much from that and I was able to take my own initiatives.
My advice would be don't stress, just have fun and go for it. You really never know until you try. I didn't really know what I wanted to do, so if I gave it a go and I never regretted it. I could sum up my internship in one experience, it would be to be a fun and an enjoyable experience of exploring my professional career path.
Bachelor of Business
Bachelor of Business
Hi, I'm James. I'm in my third year at RMIT doing a Bachelor of Business, majoring in Global Business and minoring in Marketing. I completed my internship at Caterpillar. They're the leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment and they're also an international organisation, so it links nicely to my studies.
I was really keen to get some hands-on experience within the industry that I'm already passionate about. Growing up, I worked with my family on lots of different sites that had the Caterpillar equipment. It was also a really good opportunity to get some extra credit points. I was able to secure my own internship through an industry contact. Most of the time in the internship, I was with the marketing and sales team for Global Construction Industries. I sat in on a few different meetings about sales forecasting and also helped with some promotional material. I also got to do a credit pitch report for Cat Finance. And then I spent a week in their learning centre doing a master mechanical course which is a lot of fun.
The week I spent in the learning centre doing the master mechanical course was really cool. It was for the 3600 series engines, which is the largest engines in Caterpillar production. So I thought it was really really cool to spend a week with the senior engineers and a lot of workshop supervisors and leading hands from the dealerships as well. So it was a great way to get lots of hands-on experience from the experts.
Some of the skills I developed were probably in my interpersonal skills. I had to meet a lot of people from a lot of different divisions and also my analytical skills from reading different sales forecasts and financial reports. I think this experience has influenced my career goals quite a bit. I’ve been able to experience how this organisation works, being an international organisation.
I think what surprised me most is the amount of people that I got to meet across all the different divisions. They're willing to give their time to teach you new things. And if you're willing to learn, they're willing to teach. I think if you're unsure, definitely read into it a bit more and find out because there's lots you can gain from it. A really good way to find out what you might want to do after your studies. If I could sum up my internship experience in one sentence, I would probably say that it is a highly valuable experience where I was able to link a lot of my passions for the industry with my studies.

Hi, My name is Josephine. I’m currently studying a Masters of Business Administration at RMIT. I’m currently completing my internship at Department of Transport and Planning within the Victorian Government. The division I’m in at the moment, is Land Services Victoria. We are responsible for providing advice and deliver services for government agencies and stakeholders for better land use.
The reason why I undertake an internship was because of two reasons. The first- I want to apply frameworks I’ve learnt in the classroom, to the real world practice. The second reason is that I wanted to build a professional foundation in the public sector, that’s why an internship is perfect to start my career fresh from public sector.
How I secured my internship when I applied through the career website and then after that when I got the interview, I refined my interview technique using the STAR method and that helps you to be more structured and clear with my answers when being interviewed. I also engage with industry professionals to seek feedback about my interview skills that really helps me to be more confident.
My role title at the moment is Project Support Officer in the Reform team. So what my team does is we manage the systematic transformation across the division to link to the organisational goals.
We also break down the silos across the branches by providing efficient and more effective business operations by solving their problems. We serve as internal consultants. My role specifically is that I'm responsible to support the reform projects. There was a lot of presentations, a lot of data analysis, and a lot of stakeholder engagement in my role.
I didn't really have a specific moment which was a highlight in my internship, but through the internship I learned a lot and I also went outside my comfort zone. My mana ger gave me the opportunity to be more comfortable to present in front of more senior stakeholders, especially public speaking is not really my thing.
So from this internship, I've developed heaps of skills. For example, I learned about stakeholder engagement, how to navigate complex stakeholder relationships within the government industry, and how to present ideas in a more persuasive way, and how to capture your audience with the ideas that you have.
This internship has definitely influenced my career goals. I've always wanted to work in a workplace where I can make a positive impact to the community and working in a government is such a dream come true for me. With this internship, it has solidified my intention to do my career, to be more strategy, project-based and transformation role. I was really surprised how generous people are with their time, especially like I'm an international student and I'm not really familiar with how Australian government works, especially the state government. And I think a lot of people around me are very generous to share a bit of context when we are working together and also trying to include me in their conversations.
My advice to you guys is to just go for it, because I think it's really helpful for you to gain a professional network, academic credit and real-world experience - everything is done while you're studying.
To sum up my internship, I would say my internship has been a valuable stepping stone that boosts my confidence and also more clarity in terms of my career direction.
Bachelor of Business Professional Practice
Bachelor of Business Professional Practice
I’m Minh. I’m currently a final year student completing a Bachelor of Business Professional Practice, majoring in Business Information Systems at RMIT university.
I completed my internship at Advance Vision Technology or AV Tech. They are an IT managed service provider, mainly servicing business on Eastern Coast of Australia.
I realised that as an international student, I needed to put in 110% effort compared to everyone else, just to get a better opportunity. And that's when I decided that I needed to put a step forward and start looking for internship opportunities. Luckily enough, I found Advance Vision Technology in my second year of university and I've been working with the organisation ever since.
I secured my internship through networking. I got referred to by someone at a networking event. I asked that person to go out for a coffee chat and I expressed my interest in what I love doing and how much passion I've got for sales. Thanks to my parents, they've both been in sales and I got the opportunity simply just from a coffee chat and leverage how powerful networking can be.
During my year-long internship, I've been working as a sales consultant as part of the Sales support team at the Melbourne facility.
The main responsibly focuses on creating quotations and managing different opportunities for outbound sales people or account managers, ensuring that we maintain a good relationship with our partners and vendors and distributors.
A standout moment for me was when within the first six months I've supported and assisted our account managers in closing large-sized deals with very large substantial amount and improve the team's productivity by 100%. We've received a lot of commendation and encouragement for other team members.
I can definitely name a lot of skills acquired, including communication and team working skills. People don't talk about that enough when it comes to internships, but I think maintaining clear communications with stakeholders, as well as collaborating efficiently with other people within the team, both internally and externally, definitely creates a difference. It just makes the job a lot easier.
This is definitely impacting my career pathways. I started my degree thinking I was going to be a data analyst or banker. Throughout this internship, that's made me realize that sales is the right path for me. I love talking to people, working in fast-paced environments, and being a community builder.
I think what surprised me most about this whole experience was how quick I adapted to the teams processes and workflow, and especially on the customer sales life cycle. Another key factor is the support I received from my manager and my supervisors and other internal stakeholders within the company. I'm very grateful to all the support received.
A message that I would give to any future students wanting to complete an internship would be don't wait for the right timing and start looking now. Prepare your CV, start reaching out to employers and expressing your interest. Putting the word out there actually makes a big difference and it does make a big impact in my case, so definitely start as early as you can.
To sum up my internship experience, I believe this has opened doors to opportunities I never knew existed and provided more guidance to what I want to do with my life.
