Residencies

RMIT Culture offers a range of creative residencies designed to foster artistic development.

Established in 2005, The RMIT Culture Artist Residency Program has been committed to supporting artists in expanding their creative practice. Over the last twenty years, more than 250 Australian and International artists have participated in the residency program. This program enriches RMIT's teaching and learning programs, offering firsthand knowledge and experience to students and emerging practitioners, while also becoming immersed in Melbourne’s cultural community.

A residency with RMIT Culture offers participants the opportunity to develop a significant project, strengthen skills and knowledge through peer engagement and to establish networks that can have long-reaching impact on career development. The RMIT Culture Artist Residency Program recognises the contribution creative research makes to not only University life but to our national identity by fostering and encouraging creative practitioners and cultural exchange at key stages in their development.

International residencies

In 2025, the RMIT Culture Artist Residency Program will be supporting two international exchanges, one teaching exchange with Braunschweig University of Art (HBK), Germany and another practitioner exchange with AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Niederösterreich, in Krems, Austria.

The Braunschweig University of Art (HBK) teaching exchange was established in 2019 between RMIT School of Art and HBK University as a pilot teaching exchange program where visiting staff from each university actively engage with students by teaching directly into selected programs. Hosted by the School of Art, academics undertaking the HBK exchange are offered one of RMIT Culture's residency studios for the duration of their stay. Residencies are by invitation only. This program does not accept external applications.

The AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Niederösterreich, in Krems, Austria is a reciprocal international artist studio residency program and is open to candidates in the disciplines of art, architecture, writing, animation, design and sound/experimental music. Successful applicants are offered a studio apartment and stipend to assist in realising their research project. RMIT students (HDR), graduates and staff are eligible to apply.

Graduate residencies

The RMIT Culture Artist Residency Program hosts six recent Honours and Masters student graduates in our ongoing Graduate Residency Program. Aimed at supporting recent graduates as they make that crucial next step into independent practice, the Graduate Residency Program allows RMIT Honours and Masters graduates to spend 9 weeks in our purpose-built Swanston Street studios. From 2025, places in the Graduate Residency Program will be awarded to graduates of outstanding capacity from across the College of Design and Social Context and will not be taking direct applications.
