RMIT Gallery

RMIT Gallery, located in the historic Storey Hall, is a public art gallery that presents a dynamic program of contemporary exhibitions featuring both emerging and established artists and curators. The gallery is dedicated to showcasing RMIT’s research and cultural stories through exhibitions and events that engage both the public and the student community.

Opened in 1977 with an inaugural exhibition by John Brack and refurbished in 1996, the gallery is situated in Melbourne’s cultural precinct, near landmarks like the State Library of Victoria and Melbourne Central.

RMIT Gallery has been an essential part of Melbourne’s arts scene, housed in a building with a rich history that has evolved from a site of social and political activism to its current role as a prominent venue in the city’s exhibition calendar.

Design Hub Gallery

RMIT Design Hub Gallery exists to ask questions about design’s role in the world today. Through exhibitions, conversations, performances and publications, we explore the process of design – making space to imagine, test and risk new ideas together.

Founded within RMIT University, the Design Hub Gallery has its roots in the city and in research practice. But most of all we are a public place, a zone for exploration and a platform for exchange, locally and internationally. We are an open space for discovery, questioning and experimentation.

First Site Gallery

First Site is RMIT's student gallery, focused on presenting art practices from emerging and mid-career artists. First Site provides students with a space where they can experiment, take risks and learn about presenting their work publicly, often for the first time.

The gallery presents a diverse program of exhibitions throughout the year via an Expression of Interest model and two annual exhibitions dedicated to RMIT PhD candidates called On-Site. Our EOIs are programmed by an open and equitable call-out process in Semester two each year. The On-Site program invites two PhD candidates annually to participate in an engagement focused exhibition model, sharing their research with our student cohorts and the public through workshops and events.

First Site's formation can be traced back to 1968 shortly after the creation of RMIT's Student Union. The gallery was relocated in 1996 and moved to historic Storey Hall. From its inception, First Site was conceived as a space to provide students with a conduit into creative practice, independently from RMIT’s teaching programs.

Please email us at galleries@rmit.edu.au to arrange your visit, so we can ensure we can comfortably accommodate you.

Please note:

Bookings are essential to minimise clashes with other groups and events and must be made at least two weeks in advance of your planned visit.

We strongly encourage educators to visit our exhibitions before booking a group visit. If you have any questions about the exhibition, please mention this in your booking.

Introductory talks given by gallery staff can be provided, subject to availability, please request when booking. Introductory talks will not be available for groups booking within two weeks of their visit or who arrive at the gallery without making a booking in advance. Introductory talks provide a brief overview of the exhibition and run for approximately five to ten minutes. Teachers and educators are then responsible for group engagement with the exhibition.

School groups

For primary and secondary school groups, adult supervision of students is required at all times, at no time will RMIT Gallery assume responsibility for your group.

Please find below the required teacher-to-student ratios and ensure the adequate number of teachers and guardians are present during your visit:

1:5 for primary groups
1:10 for secondary groups
1:20 for tertiary groups
