Julia Werner is a lecturer in the Landscape Architecture program at RMIT.
Julia is originally from Germany and taught and researched at the Faculty for Architecture and Landscape Science at the Leibniz University of Hanover, Germany from 2001 to 2009. She also holds a degree as Diplom-Ingenieur (equivalent to a Master degree) in Landscape Architecture and Planning from Leibniz.
Together with Professor Dr Hille von Seggern, Julia is the co-founder of STUDIO URBANE LANDSCHAFTEN (2005), a multi-disciplinary laboratory and network for design research, teaching and practice with over 25 members, which is attached to the Leibniz University of Hanover. Within the STUDIO she worked on the creation of an innovative landscape design research-led teaching concept and played a decisive role in developing the contemporary, interdisciplinary design approach 'Creating Knowledge. Innovation Strategies for Designing Urban Landscapes', edited and published in 2008 and to be republished as an e-book in 2014 (Berlin: Jovis).
With several STUDIO teams Julia worked on practice-based design research projects of urban (water) landscapes and public spaces, in Germany and internationally. She has published this work extensively in book chapters and journal articles.
Julia has taught a wide range of design studios focusing on large-scale urban landscape design at Bachelor and Master level. As a course-coordinator, she re-developed Landscape Architecture Professional Practice focusing on a strong connection between the university and industry. She also teaches Theoretical Frameworks and Foundation Studio.
Her PhD explores the potential of creativity in the design of large-scale urban landscapes.
Julia also holds an advanced diploma in Relational Gestalt Psychotherapy (Gestalt Institute Australia), a holistic approach she also incorporates in her teaching and research.
